DD1 has had chicken pox and seemed to have it worse and for longer than the other kids at school,it is now 3 weeks and she still has scabs and red site marks all over her body.
DD2 started with it on sunday and the poor mite is just as bad and her face ,neck and nappy area are awful .She has already scratched till they bleed the ones on her face, they are in her hair ,ears ,everywhere.
I'm giving her
Calpol or Medised and Piriton to try and relieve the itching and last night she had a bath which i swirled porridge oats into.
I have calamine cream to put on which is difficult as there is so many spots on her forehead as her hair is growing and she won't let me keep it out the way with clip's etc.
Can anyone recommend anything else i can do to help her?
She has just fallen asleep, she was up for most of the night.

Poor thing. I had CP really badly as a child. The only thing that helped was bicarbonate of soda. Calamine just dries in and makes it even more itchy when the flakes come off.

Bath her in a cool bath with lots of bicarb swirled in. Rinse her poor head with biarb solution as well.

Mix up a paste of bicarb and water and dot the paste on the spots. Time consuming, messy and annoying but I promise you, I can still remember the relief of the itch disappearing from the spots.

When it's all dried in, just gentle dust off the excess.

I really hope it helps. It definitely did for me. If any new spots appear; dab with fresh paste.

oh you poor thing. I remember all 4 of mone getting it within days of each other. Was a nightmare. Is she eating anything? Give her lots of yummy things to eat. I found it better to put calamine lotion in a spray bottle and spray them with it cos then you arent touching them and making them itch.

Browny · 20/03/2007 11:34

Poor little mite. I found Eurax absolutely brilliant. You can get it in cream or lotion form and I just used a cotton ball and painted the lotion all over their bodies. You can also get it free on prescription from your doctor and it stops itching for up to 8 hours!! Hope she feels better soon .

Beauregard · 20/03/2007 11:36

Thanks .
She is eating but only little bits at a time.
Will phone dp and get him to get some Bicarb, hope it is as good as you say

You poor things-sounds like its dragging on and on.

I'm finding that baths with bicarb in seem to be drying out DS's spots fairly well -in fact he's just had a bath now as hes having 2-3 a day. Its a good distraction too and takes their minds off the itching.

The only other thing I'm doing is giving him Piriton.

Good luck.

princesscc · 20/03/2007 11:39

Second bicarb! Get lots!

Beauregard · 20/03/2007 11:40

yes use EURAX, we used that on dd with eczema when she caught chicken pox a few years ago. Poor thing. We were lucky that we had special eczema clothing to keep her from scratching some areas. Its awful, good luck with it all

Beauregard · 20/03/2007 20:45

Dp took her to the doctor's this afternoon,he has prescribed her some more calamine cream and calpol,he wouldn't prescribe Eurax as he said it can take a layer of skin off.
Dp bathed her in Bicarb but he used 3 tubs of the damn stuff, i had to tell him it was a tad ott.

Rhus tox homeopathic remedy is meant to be good.
Eurax no good for under 2s but I used it with DSs with no problem and no lost skin.
Oat baths also meant to be good.

Beauregard · 20/03/2007 20:52

Thanks Soupy ,where can i get Rhus tox from?
Holland and Barratts or something?

We´ve just done this too; DS1 had it quite mildly from school, DS2 (poor unsuspecting mite) got it really badly, like you say on his face and nappy area the worst. It seems to ease off within 48 - 72 hours, the worst was over. The only thing that seemed to help was bicarb in the bath, and porridge in a sock tied over the hot tap. Then tie a knot in the sock and wash them with it. Worked really well for us.

Really feel for you, fingers crossed for a good nights sleep for you all!

morocco · 20/03/2007 20:53

sorry cos I can't remember what its called but my gp prescribed a lotion with topical pain relief in it for ds2 - worse case he'd seen of 'spotty bum' appparently!!, poor mite couldn''t even sit down

SoupDragon · 20/03/2007 21:11

Boots have RhusTox and I'm sure I got it from our large Tescos actually. It;s in a little green tube and consists of tiny little white pilules the child suicks. You can't overdose either so I got DSs to neck them at the highest dose/frequencey suggested!

Beauregard · 20/03/2007 21:12

Thanks.
