Ovarian cyst fast track referral suspected cancer

I don't know what I am hoping for...reassurance or other stories maybe.

I had a stomach bug in late Jan this year and since then had been having bowel issues which I put down to the bug messing with my stomach. Then I started getting very bloated especially around ovulation. Then in the last couple of months I have felt quite ill when I ovulate tho I have always had pain in my left side at that time of month. I went to the doc and nearly didn't mention it but because of my age (42) she sent me for a scan last weds.

The next day I was told to call the doc and they said they found a 3cm cyst but the doc was very cagey and wouldn't say what it is. Kept saying all different kinds of tumour. Wanted to say it was unlikely to be anything but she kept stumbling on her words. Saturday I got a letter saying I had been fast tracked to the oncology gynecology dept for an appointment next week and I have just had the CA125 test today. I stupidly looked at the screen and the report from the u/s said suspected cancer.

So now I am shitting myself. I have four kids, 14, 11, 8 and nearly 2. How the hell and I supposed to get through the next week without googling and generally thinking the worst.

Any websites to look at or memes or even youtube vids of fluffy kittens to help would be much appreciated.

CA125 is not a diagnostic test at any age.
It is a useful tumour marker when assessing how successful somebody's treatment is.

Talking about 'tumours' - in medic speak 'tumour' simply means a lump, mass, growth - could be anything at all.

Yes, please DO ask any questions you might have at the time. Also, bear in mind, even if the scan images are 'suspicious' and therefore lead to further investigations, they are just that: images, pretty pictures, NOT the real thing. And 'suspicious' again means just that: suspicious, warrants further investigation.

Trust me, I know how scary all of this is and the only thing I can suggest is to work really hard on not getting ahead of yourself: the likelihood is that it is not nasty, then why worry now? Or, you are deeply unlucky, and it is bad new, then you have plenty of time to worry about it then. Don't let the "what if?" poison your life just now.

Easy said, I know.... Thanks

Thank you so much Pacific. ** I feel so much better since I started this thread and reading through the replies. I have to put it behind me whilst I am looking after the toddler so I am trying to keep that up and as you say try not to think of the worst. I am also questioning whether I should ring for the results of the CA125 or just wait til next week as I know it won't tell me anything one way or another.

But I shall definitely make a list of questions so that I am prepared either way.

My DH bought me some fabulous gin chocolates from hotel chocolat so I shall treat myself to one a night til next week.

The CA125 test only has an 80% accuracy even in cases where cancer is very advanced.

I don't see any point in you asking for the result. A high reading can be due to lots of other gynae things including endometriosis.

Reetabiscuiteater · 19/06/2017 20:10

Well I couldn't help myself and rang for the blood test results and it was 13. So regardless of how accurate it is, it has done just enough to keep me positive. I am just waiting for the appointment on weds now.

Thanks again to all.

That's well within the 'normal' limits, so is hopefully a good sign. Hope your Wednesday appointment goes well.

PacificDogwod · 19/06/2017 20:43

That is well normal Smile

Hello an update from the hospital.

Consultant says it looks like a dermoid so they are sending me for an MRI. Going to see him again in 2 weeks then plan for surgery. He may take the ovary and tube too.

Feeling so much more reassured having seen him and seen the report. I really am so grateful to the NHS and feel very lucky to have such a wonderful hospital so local.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to me and reassure me. I guess I am a panicker by nature and always think of the worst.

That's really good news, Reeta. I agree, you've had great service from the NHS - it's nice to hear a such positive experience.

Oh well I'm back and back in limbo.

Consultant was quiet at first then said def not dermoid.

MRI showed 3 bilateral serous borderline tumours. Two in one ovary, one in the other. He is putting it to a multidisciplinary meeting. Options are wait and see, cystectomy or removal of both ovaries, tubes and then hrt.

Got to go back after his holiday in three weeks.

Have been on cancer research website and that is very reassuring about what that means but bit thrown now. Really wasn't what I expected when we went in.

Lots more waiting.

Oh you poor thing, 3 weeks is such a long time to wait when things are unknown. Glad to hear the Cancer Research website has given you some reassurance though and I'm wishing the next 3 weeks away for you.

I had a slightly similar issue 2 years ago with my left ovary, they thought it was a cyst, then because the tube was so huge they thought it was a Hydrosalpinx (filled with blood) and then it turned out to be a chronic undiagnosed ectopic and they said that I was very lucky it hadn't ruptured!

Good luck!

Reetabiscuiteater · 07/07/2017 21:32

Thank you Wilbur. Crikey you were lucky. I guess they never really know til they get in there.

July is a very busy month what with end of year 6 stuff and my boys have appointments too so I am hoping I will be distracted.
