Heavy periods - anyone recommend any protective pants?

I have really really stupidly heavy periods -

Leak through a super plus and night time pad in an hour - have a diva cup and have to empty that just as often.

It's becoming limiting because I have to literally stay at home when Aunt Flo comes a calling ! Which obviously I can't really do because of work .

Can anyone recommend any pants that I can wear on top to give extra protection from leaks?

Don't want to end up leaking all over my chair at work !

(Mortifyingly I leaked all over a chair in a shop recently when popping into town - was not my finest hour and was so embarrassing cleaning it up)

Have had a google but can only find ones with a waterproof layer - would like something with a lining of bamboo or similar for extra protection as well.

Might just have to start using the kids nappy inserts at this rate!

Can't help on the pants front but have found tranxemic acid from the Dr has helped me with my current period. You don't have to suffer so please get it looked into and onto some medication that may help.

Otherwise tena pants may help

WipsGlitter · 10/06/2017 17:19

Have you seen your doctor to find out why they are so heavy?

I took esmya and it stopped my periods totally.

Babyiwantabump · 10/06/2017 17:23

No haven't seen the DR yet - am going to go next week because I literally can't live like this!

They have been like this since the birth of my DS1 and was hoping when they came back after DS2 they would be lighter - but nope exactly the same! If not even heavier!

I haven't been to the DR yet because I thought it might settle after a few cycles but that doesn't seem to be the case .

While I'd echo the recommendations to see a GAP first, I can vouch for the Diary Doll pants... I used them last period for the first time, with a Mooncup (usually have to use pads the first three days), and they worked really well.

They come up a bit small, so go for the bigger size if in doubt, and they do give me a VPL. I'd love to know if anyone has got on well with Thinx....

PlayOnWurtz · 10/06/2017 17:34

Ring 111 and see ooh for some medication today. By day 2-3 of this I was nearly passing out and very headachey (see my thread a few posts down) it will slow things down as will ibuprofen

amousehaseatenmypaddlingpool · 10/06/2017 17:35

Thinx - the site is a bit Hmm and they're a bit spendy but they do the job.

Disclaimer - they wouldn't cope with 'just had a baby' type periods.

Falconhoof1 · 10/06/2017 17:42

I was looking for similar pants for my daughter recently and there are some highly rated ones on Amazon. Not tried them but have good reviews. I think medication sounds like a good plan though.

Babyiwantabump · 10/06/2017 18:34

Would thinx help with leaking though? So with pad , tamping/cup it wouldn't get through my jeans?(which is what keeps happening!!Angry)

If your pregnant days are 100% done you can enquire into ablation which will reduce your periods significantly?

Alternatively having a mirena stopped mine altogether. Although I didn't get on with it for other reasons, the side effect of no periods was amazing.

Babyiwantabump · 10/06/2017 18:53

Not 100% sure we are not going to have another so ablation is out .

Had a mirena before - was great for no periods but made my mood really low and had it removed .
Recently tried the pill and wanted to kill my OH( see previous thread!) so hormonal contraceptives are out for me really as they do seem to really mess with me .

Will ask about the other options at GP .

Am glad you are going to see the GP next week as flooding is not normal. You could have become anaemic too so the cause should be determined asap.

You should ideally be referred to a gynaecologist as this may well be outside a GPs general remit. Fibroids can cause heavy bleeding to arise and you should be checked for those.

Tweedledumb0 · 10/06/2017 19:51

@Babyiwantabump Yes, Thinx and others are designed waterproof and absorbent so there's no leading through. The Diary Doll ones def held a massive middle of the night leak for me (sorry for TMI!)

Babyiwantabump · 10/06/2017 19:58

I had a scan in-between DS1 and DS2 and nothing was found - all normal no fibroids cysts etc.

I just seem to be unlucky I suppose - My periods are regularly irregular - 36 and 24 days apart . when its the 24 days it does seem to be lighter than when its 36 days apart , only slightly though .

They do the diary doll ones in boots - will order some thanks

DD had Diary Dolls. They have simplified her life enormously (and helped with the laundry!)

Babyiwantabump · 10/06/2017 20:40

Are the pretty clever pants and diary dolls the same thing? They have 3 packs of pretty clever pants on amazon for £19

"I had a scan in-between DS1 and DS2 and nothing was found - all normal no fibroids cysts etc"

What sort of scan was done, an internal ultrasound?. That also would not detect endometriosis if it was there (that can also cause heavy bleeding).

Any test done over 6 months ago should be discounted. You need up to date test results. You have a medical problem and this is impacting also on your day to day life. I sincerely hope the GP is helpful next week and I would anyway urge you to see a gynaecologist.

Babyiwantabump · 11/06/2017 09:57

I had an external and internal ultrasound.

I have also previously had a investigative laparoscopic procedure to remove ovarian cysts (this was years ago though) and no endometriosis was found then

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/06/2017 10:06

You certainly do need up to date tests and a test result done over six months ago should be disregarded. I hope you get some answers next week.

I know 18 mths since post was made..
I have sadly had to find solution to heavy periods and excessive bleeding due to endometriosis .
have tried all the brands out there.. THINX from USA for instance.. many styles ..
BUT keep coming back to Pretty Clever Pants (designed by Carol Smillie) - now available from HSTV (high street TV) about £10 a pair... I now have around 15 pairs - and they are an ESSENTIAL for everyday life...
I am intersex, and the wider GUSSET is the best, copes with wider pads, even nightime bulky pads... BUT can be worn without pads...

They cope with leaks.. washable and ideal.

1shotcappuccino · 28/02/2019 18:13

I use Boots pharmacy heavy period relief tablets. If only I had know about these a few years ago! Can now go out and sleep through the night during my period with no worries
