This is what headlice look like here

Don't use an actual treatment just to be on safe side - as its expensive and a waste of money and nasty chemicals, only if you find something. Get a nitty gritty comb - expensive at about a tenner, but lasts forever - and you just wash hair, put on conditioner and comb through. If you do that every time you wash hair then you should keep them clear - and use teatree shampoo as nits don't like it

ahh that pic is awful, i don't ds has them but its good to know what product mums use for future reference!!!

I agree. Use conditioner and a nit comb and you will be able to see the lice on the comb. If you are not sure, put one of the lice on your hand and if it moves, you know its a louse.

Don't bother with the lotions you can buy, they are rubbish. I use teatree shampoo & conditioner.

mysonsmummy · 19/03/2007 19:45

my son has had nits and they've never looked that big - that picture is very enlarged. they probably are nits as his looks like back spec at least the eggs do. i can never clear it by just using conditioner so i use the treatment which i get free from the dr. and then use the conditoner method afterwards.

helbel3 · 19/03/2007 19:48

you can also get the nitty gritty comb on perscription

chocolatekimmy · 19/03/2007 20:59

Conditioner and a comb, should be easy on a boy. Every 2-3 days for 2 weeks should sort it.

For girls with long hair, same thing (section it off and work through). you can also run hair straighteners through to get the little suckers that stick on the hair away from the scalp

lillochum · 20/03/2007 22:17

The ole conditioner and nit-comb can do the job if you are really consistent and go through the whole family every time, and pull out every beastly egg that is attached to the hairs (white specks that look like dandruff but are glued to the hair - the nearer the head the more recently they were laid). If your kids do have them you have to keep this up day after day for weeks, especially if they are getting re-infected at school. I didn't find the chemical treatments any good, when we had a persistant infestation last year. The one exception was "Hedrin". It doesn't use the old-fashioned poisons, but covers the lice in a weird slippery liquid which suffocates them. Use it a second time a week on to kill any hatchlings and the job is done. Got rid of the little buggers at last!

juuule · 20/03/2007 22:24

Hedrin, Delacet, Nitty Gritty comb, lots of conditioner. Not all at once (well maybe - it's up to you )

mysonsmummy · 20/03/2007 22:45

not on my boy who has long thick curls!

Clary · 20/03/2007 22:48

Yeah we use nitcomb and conditioner. Need to keep doing it - at least every other day if nits there.

I comb through with tea tree oil in water every couple of weeks anyway to scare 'em off
