Bad back - but only in bed?

I really hope someone can help because I am absolutely exhausted!

For a few months now my back has started hurting whilst I am in bed. After about 3 hours asleep I can't find any position that is comfortable and it's got to the point now where my lower back hurst so much there is no way I can get back to sleep. I'm pretty sure it's not my mattress as it's relatively new and dh is fine plus when I've slept away from home it hurts in any bed. Has anyone got any ideas what I can do?

Thanks!

Sleep standing up? Sorry, not helpful, I know.

Aloveheart · 19/03/2007 17:21

could you get a new matteress?? It might be that that's giving you back ache.

ProfYaffle · 19/03/2007 17:23

could be your mattress, my back ache disappeared when we got a new bed.

anchovies · 19/03/2007 17:24

Knew you were going to say it's the mattress as am utterly broke! Is there nothing at all else it could be? Maybe something that's less than 500 quid to fix?!

You can get a good mattress for much much less than that.

Look on ebay or freecycle (google it). We got our double mattress made for around £100.

I had that for a long time after having my section. It was exactly around the site of my epidural. It couldn't be the mattress in our case - we had jsut forked out for a new one. I've jsut found that since having an epidural I've needed to make sure my back doesn't get cold at night, so wear very long tops in bed.

Thanks rhubarb, how will i know which on ebay are worth having though? Where was yours from?

Kelly I think that's it, that's exactly where it hurts! Other than keeping it warm (which I kind of do but will be extra doing tonight!) is there anything else I can do?

Ours was from a local company. Just call them and get quotes.

So long as the mattress is new, it should be ok, you don't have to buy an expensive brand or anything.

ProfYaffle · 19/03/2007 17:32

What about one of those mattress toppers made of memory foam stuff? No idea how much they are though.

LilRedWG · 19/03/2007 17:33

If you lie on your back, put a pillow under your knees and if on your side, put one between them. It helps stabalise your hips/pelvis and hold your spine straight. Only draw back is it's a bugger to turn over. If you're feeling really flush, get a full length bolster pillow - you can hug it

seb1 · 19/03/2007 17:33

What about trying one of these memory fpam toppers?

LilRedWG · 19/03/2007 17:34

Oooo - interesting about the epidural. I had a spinal...

Try doing 5 mins of yoga before you go to bed - it did it for me (and I sleep better).

And stretch to downward-facing dog...

Have exactly the same problem! Bought a new mattress made out of memory foam..and it is an improvement. Still taking painkillers in the evening and having osteopath appointments though
