I have been tested positive for HPV

Last week, I got the results back from a smear, which showed I had abnormal cells showing CN1 - CN2 with a positive for HPV.

Today I had a Colposcopy which the doctor said showed definite signs of abnormal cells. He has sent the bioposy off which will take 10 days to come back.

My question is, what now. I am trying to find out info on the net and am scaring myself as everything comes back with cancer info, and as you can imagine I cannot comprehend the info, and am unsure what to think, as my doctor told me I don't have cancerous cells 'yet'.

I have never slept around, yet my boyfriend has just admitted to me he had a blow job from a prostitute in a hotel, when he was away on business a couple of years ago. Could she have passed this onto him, and then he passed it onto me? He has not had signs of warts etc though, which I do not have either.

Will I have HPV for life? and will it affect my chances of conceiving?
What kind of results do you get back from a biopsy? will I be on medication, can the HPV be treated with medication?

Sorry for so many questions, I am hoping someone who has HPV will be able to advise me better, because the information I am reading from the internet is really making me worried, and I just need someone to tell me the facts straight up.

Hong Kong is probably worse because they have the topless bars etc, so its more obtainable. Here the 'goings on' are behind closed doors, hairdressers, massage places and kareoke bars. In hotels, the girls call your rooms asking if you want a massage ie - sex, or put their business cards under your hotel room door.

in the Uk if they can see the cells are abnormal (hardly a surprise when the smear said they were!) they would normally treat immediately unless the area is too large - either by laser or electric loop and usually under local anaethestic. I understand it is uncomfortable but you are out within the hour. If cells are too far gone to laser (unlikely if they were only showing CIN 1-2)you will need cone biopsy like me under GA and overnight stay in hospital. Still no big deal in my opinion, though more uncomfortable afterwards for a while.

Biopsy will just give an accurate reading of what the smear has indicated.

Are there any obvious symtons of syphilis and gonhorrea? or does it take blood tests to find out if you actually have them? Would a man show obvious signs of having these diseases? My partner gets a rash 'down there' which he has always claimed to be caused by jock itch, or when I wash his boxer shorts with his socks.

ANY rash on one's genitals should be checked out if you're sexually active.

Both gonorrhea AND syphilis are on the rise again.

Please ask your doctor for an STD screen.

Chlamydia is also incredibly common and generally symptomless in women, although it is an increasing cause of infertility in women because it can scar the Fallopian tubes.

MuckyAnthea · 19/03/2007 10:46

thanks suejonz, I am really confused as to why they did the colposcopy then? I have to pay for all this myself, today cost me over 560 pounds. I have no health insurance that covers me for this kind of thing.

Thanks expat. My partner says he has been checked out with the rash, and the doctors say it is jock itch. BUT when I found out last week I had the abnormal smear results, I asked my DR whether it could be something my partner has given me, and the first thing she asked me was, 'does he have a rash?'...Now I am getting really worried.

i didnt have to say in overnight with cin 3, was given injection to numb(which didnt work) they did their job then was sent home

suejonez · 19/03/2007 10:49

I don't know why they would do colposcopy and not treat, I know that is possible but its just not vey common in the UK. I could be cynical and suggets as you ae paying, it generates more cash having two visits or it could be more common practice in Asia, or it could be that the doctor though you needed a cone biopsy (though don't see why he/she wouldn't have said that to you at the time).

suejonez · 19/03/2007 10:51

But you had laser treatment Strawb, I had to have surgery (hence overnight stay) - laser/loop are MUCH more common, I was unlucky.

Mumpbump · 19/03/2007 10:51

Where are you? I had two colposcopy's on the NHS - one for HPV, but was so long ago, I can't remember anything much about it so can't offer any advice.

I think you might get a smelly discharge with gonorrhea, but not sure. I don't think you get any symptoms with syphilis until it's very advanced. Henry VII had syphilis which was the reason most of his children died. Untreated, it can also cause mental problems, I think.

I have had 3 full screens in my life. The first one was when I realised my second sexual partner was promiscuous and was seeing another woman who was into S&M and used to go out with a drug dealer! It does give you peace of mind and, as I say, you only need to sleep with one promiscuous bloke with a dodgy past to catch something...

Mumpbump · 19/03/2007 10:52

PS - colposcopy can be a form of treatment. I didn't need anything else.

expatinscotland · 19/03/2007 10:53

In the US, they don't treat at the time of colpo, either. They wait for the results to come back from pathology so they can decide on the best course of treatment - cryo, LEEP, cone, wait and see, etc.

Also, the colpo is usually performed by a nurse practitioner, whereas whatever treatment is carried out by a GYN consultant.

suejonez · 19/03/2007 10:53

colposcopy is just looking at teh cells and taking a scrape - in the Uk they would treat at the same time with laser/loop but doesn;t sound like they did in this case. I also had colposcopy with no reatmeent becuase cells were too extensive and needed surgery.

MuckyAnthea · 19/03/2007 10:54

How would you know if you had a cone biopsy? They did some tests, but I am unsure what for now.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 19/03/2007 10:54

Chlamydia can be entirely symptomless.

suejonez · 19/03/2007 10:54

based on Expats desciption it sounds like your doctor follows similar practice MA.

suejonez · 19/03/2007 10:57

lol muckyanthea - trust me you would know if you had a cone biopsy - I was in hospital for two nights and they removed the surface of my cervix and packed me with gauze (sorry TMI). No heavy lifting for a few days and you need help with the children, then no sex for 4-6 weeks and a course of drugs to stop haemoragging (spelling?).

I think you would have noticed!

suejonez · 19/03/2007 10:57

oh and a general anaethestic!

StrawberrySnowflakes · 19/03/2007 10:57

to my recolection, i aslo ahd the cone biopsy(seeing my notes stated this??), i was in most of day and they did carry out a different procedure after they laserd and checked it out??am i imaginaing things????

StrawberrySnowflakes · 19/03/2007 10:58

oops, cross posts, i definatly didnt have that done!

MuckyAnthea · 19/03/2007 10:58

Yes, it sounds like that to me. I went to an American doctors and saw the head gyno man. I was tested for clamydia and it came back negative.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 19/03/2007 10:58

You would know if you'd had a cone biopsy! It's a surgical procedure.

All a colpo is, technically, is a specialised camera, a colposcope, used to examine the cervix in more detail.

A biopsy can or cannot be taken at the same time if deemed necessary.

It is NOT a treatment, it is just an examination.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 19/03/2007 10:59

thye must have been saying this was next step or something?? as they ahd great trouble removing the cells and had three consultants trying to do it..room was full

NotanOtter · 19/03/2007 10:59

expat what about link std (warts) and cancer

MuckyAnthea · 19/03/2007 11:00
