We are all getting over a cold but have this persistent lingering dry cough which is horrible. Cough medicines just don't work. Does anyone have a home/alternative remedy ?

Bought a humidifier a few weeks ago from Argos was about £30 a funny kettle shaped thing - is sonic so doesn;t get hot just pumps little beads of water into the air and I have to say it has worked a treat stopping DS coughing - DH has Man Flu at the moment and is another story altogether - I am having to plug things in and force him to take his medicine - the F**ker!!

Get a humidifier though it really does work.

I was told to hang my washing to dry in the bedroom and put damp cloths on the heating - also an onion, cut in half on the bed side table. Seemed to help dd at night!

glycerine (you can get it in boots)or honey mixed with a drop of lemon juice works for my lot

These are all bizarre and interesting.

Can I hijack and ask if there are also remedies for chesty coughs for long term reference?

Frankincense essential oil is soothing: works best sprinkled on a wet towel which you then put on a hot radiator to humidify the room, or in an oil burner (best in one with a large water reservoir)

dissolve turmeric in water and drink. Tastes vile, but turmeric has natural antiseptic properties. The powder can also be used on grazes to stop bleeding.

manuka honey - also tastes nice unlike some other remedies

iris66 · 19/03/2007 12:58

menthol crystals (a tiny tiny piece)dissolved in hot water & inhaled is good for chesty cought but it's very strong (and probably only safe for adults!) Our Dr prescribes some once but I think you can get them from Boots too.

Agree with manuka honey being best if you're going to use honey - it's the most anti bacterial.

My mum's remedy - wouldn't have it for a meal course, but does the trick:
Soack for the night half an onion in honey. In the morning, take the onion out and drink the "juice" of honey.
Wish you better!

Hmm, I think I'd rather just put turmeric in a curry

iris66 · 19/03/2007 17:03

isn't it turmeric that helps prevent alzheimers too?

I used to put a few drops of Eucalpytus oil into a bowl of steaming water in the bedrooms last thing at night. That seemed to do the trick for the kids.

Prop yourself up in bed too. Keep rooms ventilated during the day.

not sure about alheimers, but it is reputed to protect against cancer and heart disease and is used in some countries to treat early cancer. It is amazing stuff and stull being researched. It's also good for repiratory conditions such as asthma.

Kelly1978 · 20/03/2007 20:21

sorry about the typos, very tired and no woff to bed!

lillochum · 20/03/2007 21:44

My mum swears by "Fishermans Friends" for a dry cough - personally I find them too revolting! I prefer a hot cup of tea, and maybe a spoonful of honey.

rosie76 · 20/03/2007 21:50

Honey is a miracle, I have a bottle of the sqirty stuff on the bathroom shelf ready for anyone coughing.
