IBS flare up can't get it settled help!

Minime85 · 04/06/2017 08:46

Diagnosed IBS for about 15 years. Sporadic attacks generally and about 4-5 very bad attacks in this time where I lose stones in weight and go down around two dress sized. Seem to be having the latter at the moment. Can't keep anything in for the last 2 weeks really. Popping buscopan and Imodium like it's going out of fashion to be able to still go to work and do normal activities. Had acupuncture too which has been a lifesaver for me but even this not touching it.
I am already wheat free and barely any alcohol, no greasy food etc etc.
Just looking for anyone who also suffers with IBS who may have ideas I haven't yet tried 😩 Thanks in advance for any help 😊

Have you tried Kefir,Bone broth or Collagen smoothies?Dairy may also exacerbate Ibs.Coconut oil is very soothing for tummies. Also live yoghurt, like the Kefir has healthy bacteria in that can help settle your tummy.I've had Ibs for a number of years and the above along with recipes from Michael Mosleys book The Healthy gut has really soothed my tummy.Chuckling Goat Kefir is well worth looking at.Tumeric is also very soothing in food and teas.
The Fodmap diet can also help you identify your trigger foods.

If it has suddenly got worse I think you should go to the GP just to make sure that it isn't anything else.

I was told by my doctor that too much ibruprofen regularly can really irritate IBS symptoms. She said just to take it occasionally when the flare ups where at their worst.
Do you eat lactose? That's the worst for me. Sugar also affects me too if I have too much of it. Oh and caffeine in any form such as coke or green tea is an absolute no no or I'll have crippling stomach cramps.
Definitely get some turmeric supplements. They have calmed my bloating and cramps down massively. Also take a strong probiotic supplement too and drink lots of peppermint tea.
Could you ask your doctor to refer you for a scan at hospital? They could check to see if you have anything like an ulcer or scarring in your stomach or bowel. Have you also had blood tests for things like chrons and colitis? Hope you feel a lot better soon

I have switched to lactofree milk and my symptoms are much less frequent.

Thanks everyone. I can link change to new medication really as now on tranexamic acid for heavy periods and my ibs has progressively got worse since then. Like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place though with that as need to take it as period so heavy struggling to function then Confused I eat very little diary as basically too much of any one thing upsets me. I too can't do green tea or caffeine, not had a cup of coffee for at least 20yrs! I'll look into the turmeric tablets and I thought about a probiotic I've had symprove in the past. Over years had so many blood tests to check for everything. Will give it another week and go see gp. To be honest I get very mixed understanding there and usually it's give me peppermint capsules or mebeverne neither of which work for me.

I drink rooibos tea (the masala one) instead of tea or coffee. I always have a couple of bags with me, in case anyone offers me a drink.

That's a really potent NSAID and the one time I had a similar one ( used to work in the pharmaceutical industry) I had instant belly ache! That was a pretty vital piece of information you missed out there!!

Minime85 · 04/06/2017 11:40

Sorry teta never thought until reading responses. What's a NSAID? I am going to leave them off in June in hope that it settles as I have to take them in July as on holiday. Just makes work very difficult either way either the period or IBS Blush

Nsaid is a non steroidal anti inflammatory .Nurofen is one and Ponstan - the one you're on is a very powerful one.Can you track your symptoms with the times you're on it ?( as surely not all the time). In between maybe try gut soothing treatments - bone broth.I've just made some this morning - It's delicious!Coconut oil in foods and powdered collagen ( helps repair gut lining).Read the Kefirise blog on the Chuckling Goats website. Its a really interesting, practical and common sense read and suggests various ways you can improve your health.

I'm having a bad flare at the moment, also. Stress makes it so much worse.
I can't drink tea or coffee (ever) and can only eat sweetcorm, popcorn, spinach and lettuce when I'm not having a flare up.
Apparently onion and garlic is so, so bad for Ibs. I should give it up but can't.
One thing I can really recommend if you haven't tried it is Pepto Bismol. Not good for IBS C but if you have IBS D (which you do) its great. Oh and white bread only and no seeds/nuts

Minime85 · 05/06/2017 17:22

Teta thank you I will look. Yeah it has been getting worse over last three cycles but this last time it's two weeks since I stopped taking tablets and i only managed to eat a full meal with no Imodium yesterday! I am going to skip June's just means horrendous period, to try and let it settle a bit more. I will look into the other things you suggested.

Screwtuna, absolutely stress makes me worse and had two big events going on this week just gone which hasn't helped. I only have de caf tea. I will look at pepto bismol too.

Have you tried the FODMAP diet as it has done wonders for my ibs. It does restrict onion, garlic, wheat, lactose and quite a bit of fruit and veg but it really works.
Once you work out the alternatives it is not that bad and I hardly notice not having things like onion and garlic in my food.
Definitely worth a try as it does work and there are lots of facebook support groups which really help in the early stages of the diet.

PookieDo · 05/06/2017 20:34

Have you had an ultra sound for the bleeding?

You sound a bit like me. Bloody fibroids pushing on bowel, painkillers and periods and meds all add up to one big mess.

Alcohol is usually my trigger but it doesn't always settle easily. I don't eat any fruit now because that makes it V bad!

JustRosieHere · 05/06/2017 20:41

I take aloe Vera juice twice a day, is from holland and Barrett. Following a low carb diet with minimal dairy (I seem to be ok with cheese). I also batch cook bone broth and add turmeric when I drink it. Processed and greasy food as well as dairy is a massive trigger for me. Once under control I can loosen up on the diet a bit.

whatsgoingonn · 05/06/2017 20:56

I've recently started reading this book and the author writes about how problems in the pelvic and pelvic floor can cause lots of other problems including IBS symptoms... I'm only part way through but worth taking a look.

whatsgoingonn · 05/06/2017 20:57

The book is named Heal Pelvic Pain

IDismyname · 06/06/2017 18:14

I'd also suggest looking into:

  • FODMAP Diet (as suggested upthread - possibly cures more than 50% of cases of IBS, apparently...)

  • Probiotics (such as these www.bio-kult.com/ Biokult)

  • Kefir or Saukraut. If you buy either of these, check ingredients carefully. You're better off making your own.

  • Turmeric - BUT BUT BUT - you MUST take it with the following additions otherwise it doesn't work: cooked up with black pepper and coconut oil. On its own, the body cannot assimilate it. Look up Golden Paste on Google. I'm a member of a FB group - they have huge success with it. (It is also a blood thinner, so check first...)

  • Lastly, some Apple Cider Vinegar (the real organic stuff thats not pasturised) - teaspoon in a glass of water.
