Gp is investigating dd (18) for PCOS/endo
She's currently on the combination pill. Was on rivegdon now swapped to lucette. She's still having painful periods and bad pms. This is her 5th month on the pill.
Just wondering how people are treated with both?
She's very hairy

Update
Dd tried to get an appointment and couldn't so a doctor is ringing her. And I've told dd she has to be firm and forceful which I know she is and it's a common issue with teachers saying she is too forceful with her opinion. I've told her to be the same with the gp. And not to be scared to say I need it's not a want of a referral to gynaecology

I hope she has heard from the doctor by now.

Deep pain during sex is highly indicative of endometriosis being present.

The number of bleeds she is getting is abnormal as well. Endometriosis cannot be at all ruled out here. PCOS and endometriosis can indeed co-exist - I was eventually diagnosed with both.

Doctor rang her back and said he couldn't give a second opinion and to continue seeing the gp she is seeing about it
I rang up and got the same message and said it wasn't good enough

Good for you, shes entitled to a second opinion and if they arnt willing to give it then go to another surgery.

Puffpaw · 08/06/2017 00:13

Can you afford just one private gynae appointment? Just to get things moving? You can then go back to nhs with a plan? This sounds dreadful, your poor dd. If not then just keep insisting.
You can take all the vits and minerals I mentioned upthread e.g. Magnesium when on a course of oxytetracycline but you cannot take them at the same time of day as they interfere with absorption, so antibiotics first thing then vits and minerals with supper. I'd add a good probiotic to the list as well.

Puffpaw · 08/06/2017 00:18

Oh and if she is on antibiotics twice a day then take the vits and minerals and probiotics at lunchtime, you need a minimum3 hour gap.

FantasyAndHope · 08/06/2017 11:51

A year ago I would have gone private but this is an expensive year with looking at universities etc... if I could I would unfortunately not even one appointment I can stretch to.

Ultrasound appointment has come through. 7th July Shock I'm shocked

OP posts:
AttilaTheMeerkat · 08/06/2017 15:33

I would try phoning them every couple of days to see if there are any cancellation appointments in the meantime.

Be aware though that the internal ultrasound will not detect endometriosis if it is there. Its more useful for detecting PCOS if it is present; the cystic follicles on the ovaries though do disappear only to be replaced by further cystic follicles. The polycystic ovary can have a "ring of pearls" appearance to it and can also be larger than normal (a normal ovary is about the sixe of a walnut) size.

FantasyAndHope · 08/06/2017 17:07

I've ran and asked if they could move it and they said gp hadn't marked as urgent so that's why it's such a long wait.

Hi OP. I have borderline PCOS and mild endo so not as bad as your DD but I have some experience of dealing with crap hormones etc.
What I would suggest is trying to treat this holistically and naturally, rather than medically. Doctors will just throw medication at you and it won't actually treat anything other than the symptoms.
Shes been given the pill to help, but what about if she wants to have children? I would come off all pills and drugs.
Google PCOS diet. There are also loads of herbs etc which can help.
In regards the hirsutism - DO NOT let her shave her face!! Wax and bleach in between. NO-NO's are not good either - they only burn the hair to the follicle, not the root. I epilate my arms and abdomen, wax my face and shave legs, bikini line and underarms - not that often though as thankfully my OH doesn't care either way.
PM me if you like and I'll give you some examples of what helped me :)

Thankyou for your help. If dd wasn't doing alevels and exams the holistic route I would try but given the fact she has exams. I would rather her be treated medically and then try holistic treatments purely so she can apply to universities and sit her exams and get the future she wants.
In regards to children dd has always been clear from a young age she doesn't want children she is very career driven and not family driven, that may change in the future but given the fact she is in a relationship it is also better she is on some form of contraception and she is off to a sexual health clinic tomorrow

You said you were borderline? Were your bloods borderline? How did they diagnose?

OP posts:
MissBax · 08/06/2017 19:00

Fantasy - PCOS is diagnosed (amongst other things) by doing an ultrasound scan and looking at active follicles in your ovaries. I was told that it is 12 or more active follicles. I had exactly 12 which is why they said it was borderline. Some people will have 50/60 or more!
I had a laparoscopy to diagnose and remove some of my endometriosis.

I totally hear what you're saying in regards your DDs studying and uni so if that's working for her then that's fine for now, but I really would try and get her off any hormones - it's really not good for our bodies. There are non-hormonal options of contraception such as the copper IUD, although this won't necessarily be appropriate for her given her history and possible endo.

FantasyAndHope · 08/06/2017 19:11

missbax
Her blood results come back as borderline and we have an ultrasound app.
I hear what your saying in regards to hormones dd watches a lot of sexual health YouTubers Hannah witton etc and that was something she thought about before the pill. It doesn't seem to be working for period pain however the gp has said she would like dd to remain on the pill as it gives her More Normal periods.
Dd is looking at both coils and it seems the one with hormones in would be better, again its hormones but ultimately if it gives her a normal life then so be it.

Always keep fertility in mind - I didnt want children at all and now have the career etc worked hard, studied lots, very driven, but in my 30's when I was told it might be very difficult to concieve when having other tests I was honestly quite devastated and wasnt even contemplating a family. Just something tobear in mind.

FantasyAndHope · 08/06/2017 21:23

She does bear it in mind SIB have always told her to never dismiss children. Another 5 weeks of been exhausted and fatigued

Diagnosis is key. PCOS and endo have different treatments. Gold standard for the treatment of endo is excision surgery, which for many can be considered curative. Mine was life changing. The mirena coil can be a good option but doesn't work for everyone and has many side effects. However can be a good stopgap whilst waiting for surgery. I would not consider any other hormonal treatments for endo. PCOS treatment includes following a low GI/low carb diet to ensure weight remains normal and treating hirsutism with laser/other hair removal. Wait for the ultrasound to be done (keep ringing for cancellations) then go back to the GP and demand a referral to gynae.

FantasyAndHope · 09/06/2017 22:14

Dd has researched both. It seems the combination pill is commonly used for both.
Will be demanding a ref

Hiya as an aside I saw a gynae and she talked at length about endometriosis with me. She suggested that swimming is very good for helping with the pain and keeps you fit at the same too. She also advised yoga was good. These aren't instead if medicines but just help you feel better in yourself. Thought this may be worth a try. Xxx

FantasyAndHope · 07/07/2017 15:37

Dd has just has the ultrasound and the radiographer said there was nothing abnormal or untoward there.

OP posts:
FantasyAndHope · 07/07/2017 15:45

It did take her a long time to find her left ovary. I always thought they couldn't tell you the results of a scan? Hmm

OP posts:
niqnet1 · 09/07/2017 12:54

I had an ultrasound recently and they explained everything to me in that appointment.
