My DD Has To Have An Abdominal Scan -Anyone Know How They Go ABout It?

Hi everyone, Not posted for ages,Problems with my dd's tummy. She has just turned 2 and has had SEVERE trapped wind from the day she was born.

She had an xray at 10 months old and everything was perfectly normal according to the radiologist. The only thingwas that she had impacted stools! Ever since then she has been on 15ml lactolose solution to keep the stools soft. I've tried weening her off it but because her diet is so poor - (her choice - ofcourse), she has to remain on it.

Anyway the question I would like answering is whether anyone knows how they can keep a wriggling 2 yr old still. They said the actual scan will take 20 mins plus all sorts of other tests which will take 40 mins. I know my dd will be totally traumatised by this and she is too young for me to explain the procedure. She is a very axnious child and very shy too.

I really want to know what is causing her this discomfort every night but at the same time don't want to traumatise her. At the end of day, if she won't keep still they won't be able to scan her.

Gastro docs have ruled out food intolerances - I just don't know what to think any more except I want my dd's dscomfort to end.

Thanks in advance.

My son has a heart scan every six months. They understand that your child my not keep still, rarely would a two year old do such a thing. Bribery worked best for me at two explaining that if he sat still a while he would get a suprise. Also it is a good idea to get a doctors kit and start pretending, you lie down for five minutes etc. then her, she will be more comfortaboe with it then if it is not treated as such a big deal. In the actual hospital they sometimes have a projector on the wall with pictures, mobiles and lots of posters. I think with my son it took a few minutes away but then he got bored so you move onto the next distraction; bubble blowing and reading books. At my sons last scan, he is three now he refused to lie down so they scanned him on my knee. Try not to feel the pressure of this, i am sure you will have very understanding staff and everybody works at relaxing the child until something works! Good luck

Thanks fairyfly for the reply. I was very interested to hear about the distraction techniques used.

I'll still have to think about it though as my dd vomits with anxiety and stress just by having her hair cut and buying new shoes!!.

Thanks anyway.
