Am I panicking about nothing?

Im going on a waiting list to have one of my teeth straightened in order to have a brace fitted. THis will require a general anaesthetic becasue the tooth in question is still in my gum. It never came down and i was left with a baby tooth that looked tiny in comparison to my other teeth.
Anyway, im scared of being put to sleep. What does it feel like? Also I have asthma and im worried about being flat on my back and not being able to breathe. I know these are just routine procedures for surgeons but Im papping myself.

You'll be fine. You can tell the anaesthetist about your asthma and related worries. He/she will probably put a needle into the back of your hand and will give you an injection. After that you will remember nothing until your dental surgery is over and done with. It literally feels like you're falling asleep. Good luck.

Do they put a tube down your throat? Or does that depend what you are having done?

I had all four wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic. I remember them giving me the anaesthetic. Then I woke up.

I had no sensation of falling asleep, and it was quite weird because I literally felt that I had lost time. It was quite disconcerting, but not a bad experience. Obviously, I was in some pain from the operation, but nothing too bad. I would do it again if necessary.

I had huge injections (about eight cos some of them didn't work into my gums when I had mine out - wish I had been GA'd!!! Good luck, don't worry.

The main reason im scared to be put to sleep is cos i once read about this woman who had a GA to remove a lump in her breast, except she woke up while they were cutting into her, but she was completely paralysed becasue only part of the anaesthetic had worked. She could hear and feel everything that was going on but could do nothing cos she couldnt move or make any sound!
That sounds mental but it must be true cos i read it in take a break

That's extremely rare. You'll be fine

Look, not saying there are no risk of having an anaestheitic nor that there are no risk to an op...however, the risks will be assessed and the options you have will then be explained to you!
I have had loads of generals ( I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate), but obviously am fine nw and healthy enough...
There are many different kind of "cocktails" for putting someone to sleep, and your Anasthetist will know which one will be the best for you and your Asthma, etc...!
As for breathing, whilest under you will not breath by yourself, but a machine will do it usually via tube....

3andnomore · 17/03/2007 20:27

agree with jalopy that is very very very rare...also, generally a good doc will be able to assess this situation by the heart rate etc....if pain is felt.
I am sure that they are now more then ever aware of these sort of complications...it still is a rare happening though!

lol @ "it must be true coz I read it in take a break" If this concerns you, speak to the doctor or anaestheologist. They will be able to put your mind at rest, or at least come up with a signal if this does happen to you.

If it happens at all, it is very, very rare.
