My mother's.. not mine..

She can't find anywhere open.. NHS Direct are useless (said they could "treat her for pain relief" ???? and did she "have any other symptoms".. ???... do they actually have brains or do they read EVERYTHING off a script??)

I know this is not life or death stuff.. but she can't eat.. and it's Mother's day tomorrow and we are supposed to be all going out for a meal...

Does anyone have any advice?

Sorry. I know this is not funny. I know this is a serious question. I know that having visions of your poor mother at special mothers day meal saying "I'll just have the soup" are not funny.

I'll go away now....

greenday · 17/03/2007 14:08

Private? My front tooth broke on 23 Dec and I faced the similar prospect of going through X'mas and NY without a front tooth (ugly sight!!). All I can say is ... thank heavens for private!!

ComeOVeneer · 17/03/2007 14:08

There are dental labs around that do a "while you wait" repair service. Not sure how best to find one though. Try yellow pages or perhaps 118 118.

ComeOVeneer · 17/03/2007 14:10

Private dentist is no good unless they have an on site technician and most don't so they have to send the denture of to be repaired, generally needs 24-48hrs before you get it back.

fryalot · 17/03/2007 14:12

Shiny - am really sorry for making light of your poor mother's situation.....

greenday · 17/03/2007 14:18

Oh, what I meant with private was that, they stick a temporary fake tooth until your existing one is repaired or a proper one is ready. Does that help?

ComeOVeneer · 17/03/2007 14:19

Greenday I think you are talking about temporary crowns the OP I assume is referring to dentures.

greenday · 17/03/2007 14:23

Yes I was!! I can't believe it!! I obviously didn't read the title well enough!! False teeth ... of course!
I'm singing a different song here ... sorry for the confusion!

ComeOVeneer · 17/03/2007 14:41

Whatever you do don't use superglue and try and repair them yourself. It is fiddly to do and if you get it wrong the super glue is so strong the denture is ruined and she will need to fork out for a new one.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldinghands · 17/03/2007 15:43

LOL only just got back to this. Don't worry about smirking Squonk, we have all already done so ourselves re the soup etc, although to be fair, mum is genuinely stressed and uncomfortable, has wire digging into her gum, has forked out over twenty quid for "tooth cement" type stuff to try and temporarily fix them (to no avail) and absolutely will NOT tolerate the thought of her taking them out and going without until Monday! (Usually we aren't allowed to even mention her false teeth, let alone dicuss them!! )

I think she was heading for the superglue option.. I'd better ring her and tell her not to...

What did you manage to sort in the end?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldinghands · 19/03/2007 16:29

Nothing A private dentist offered to help for a £50 call-out charge but mum couldn't afford that. She ate soup when we went out.

I was going to post anyway.. mum has today been told she needs a whole new set as they are worn out, and even on the NHS they are going to cost £200!!!! My mum is a pensioner and in receipt of housing benefit due to low income.. is this right???

Do pensioners really have to fork out hundreds for dentures?? Teeth are a necessity aren't they???!

madmarchhare · 19/03/2007 16:33

There is a means tested benefit that she could try for. I cant rememberr the name of the form, but I think its the same one as for prescriptions etc.. Maybe DWP website could point you in the right direction?

madmarchhare · 19/03/2007 16:35

look here

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldinghands · 19/03/2007 17:01

Thank you MMH, we were just going down that route anyway. It seems she can apply for help, but would still have to make the initial outlay which she just doesn't have. She isn't on income support (is a few pence too "well off" to get it.. and suffers considerable hardship as a result) so I have told her to ring the Jobcentre plus and see if she can get a crisis loan. They may of course say no.

OK well I tried.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldinghands · 19/03/2007 22:59

Sorry ComeOVeneer , I didn't mean that to sound like an ungracious thank you.. I meant a genuine thank you . Just frustrated with the system, not you!!!

OP posts:
ComeOVeneer · 20/03/2007 13:02

Sorry Shiny, was in a bad mood last night and a bit disgruntled at no "thank you" from you. Childish and silly, I do apologise.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldinghands · 20/03/2007 13:48

I didn't thank you personally did I ComeOVeneer, , sorry about that.. I was confusing the info from you and madMarchhare.. sorry.. and thanks

We have now sent off for an HC1 form so mum will probably be able to get some help at least.. but i can't believe teeth are not considered "necessities" for pensioners on low incomes. Are they supposed to be fed intraveneously (or eat soup!) until they've saved up???!

People in need of wigs get those free!!!
