Lost voice - anything I can do?

I've had a nasty head cold this week. It's mostly gone now (well, nose still a bit stuffed up, but I can think clearly, or more clearly anyway). Yesterday I had a horrible horrible scratchy deep weird voice, probably the worst I ever had. But it didn't hurt to talk, and we had a dinner party, so although I did my best to avoid straining my voice, I still talked a fair bit. By the end of the evening I was basically mute.

This morning, I can sorta talk, but my voice is dreadful. Is there anything I can do to fix it? It doesn't hurt to talk, my throat doesn't really hurt. Do I just need to wait it out?

Bump? I'm whispering, and trying to avoid talking ...

get back into bed with a cup of tea and tell DH you are far too ill to move and he will have to look after you!

and that you need the telly and the newspaper

and a packet of Tunes!!

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 08:35

But I don't feel like lying still! I actually feel like being out of bed, I feel mostly ok!

(I've spent all week feeling like death warmed over, and still had to do all my usual stuff, including biking into central London, doing two shifts at a nursery, etc etc. It's nice to actually feel like getting up!)

Will resting more really make a difference?

Dont think it will really.

Maybe keep your throat warm and keep chatting to a minimum.

3littlefrogs · 17/03/2007 09:46

Lots of warm drinks and rest your voice. Difficult I know, but really important. Hope you feel better soon.

fizzbuzz · 17/03/2007 10:06

rest your voice. I am a teacher and frequently suffer laryngitis. It doesn't hurt, but if you try and talk a lot you will strain your vocal chords.

Smoke signals or sign language only!

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 11:06

Does whispering strain the voice?

DH has taken the boys out, anyway, so I am not talking now, at all.

Ugh, I spent all day working hard at not talking, clapping to get boy's attention (and DH's) and then ran into a mum from DS1's old school, and spent ages chatting, while DS1 played with her son.

So am now nearly mute again. Still, better than I was this morning, and can hope to heal overnight, surely? I do talk in my sleep, but hopefully not much.

i had this at christmas, turns out it was laryngitis and i needed antibiotics ! hope you are ok x

3littlefrogs · 17/03/2007 20:15

I have a friend who is a speech therapist, and I do remember her telling me that whispering is just as bad for the vocal cords as talking if you have laryingitis.

janeite · 17/03/2007 20:20

Don't whisper - it's really bad for you. I speak from experience as a teacher with a history of voice problems!!!! Rest your voice; communicate by gesture or note. Drink lots of water (at room temperature, not cold) or warm water with lemon. Suck sweets but not cough sweets (as these dry your throat).

3andnomore · 17/03/2007 20:38

hot lemon and honey (with some hot water, too, lol) is brilliant.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/03/2007 21:37

I guess I haven't been whispering so much as talking really really quietly. Hopefully tonight will improve matters.

Helpfully, tomorrow we are meeting an old uni friend of DH (who I know too) and going to a birthday party for one of DS1's classmates.

My voice is coming back, hurrah! It's pretty weak today, but sounds husky and ok, rather than thoroughly broken.

That is so funny (well, not really!!)

I had a bit of a cough in the week, then Thursday evening my voice went really husky and by morning I couldn't talk at all

very frustrating especially when the children shouted to me of DH!! And I couldnt yell at them either!! I kept having to nock on the door or walls lol lol

It was very embarrassing at school, especially as Im known for talking lots lol

It has come back today but still husky and I feel it is a bit of a strain!

Glad you are ok now

I was hoping my DH would like my husky voice but it ahd no effect!!!!!!!!
