I think all you can do is steam...I once sat for hours in the bathroom with the shower running hot

Poor you and DS

Lots of steam in the room, you could also lift the cot/bed at the head end, that seems to help dd when she is croupy. Hope he's ok. x

I've raised the head of his cot and he seems to be breathing a bit better now. He's been fine all day it just came out of the blue. I thought croup season had gone now.

Bloody hell, what a nightmare for you - hope you're all doing OK now. He should recover well now he's got the steroids.

alibobins · 17/03/2007 10:22

Well, in my experience, (RGN, have looked after bad croup/epiglotttis cases in past) after intial worsening things will start to improve anyway, but the steroids will have calmed things down a great deal. Were you not given any oral steroids at all? Sometimes these are necessary, sometimes not. As I'm sure you know, croup symptoms are caused by a virus which inflames the already tiny air passages in a child, and like all virus will naturally run its course. But today make sure the atmosphere is not too dry for DS, give him plenty of drinks. And if you think that he's getting worse again go to A and E - you absolutely did the right thing last night.

alibobins · 17/03/2007 10:48

they gave him steriods last night and they said they would cover him for twelve hours. I have got prednisolone at home for other breathing problems and various inhalors.
Thanks for the info its all a bit too much to take in in situations like that.
