Polyp on cervix

So, nurse taking my smear casually says 'has anyone mentioned you have a polyp on your cervix?' No, they hadn't so I now have to get the GP to look at it with a probable referral to gynaecology.

Anyone else had this? What's the procedure if they want to remove it? Trying not to worry but it's in the back of my mind all the time and my GP appointment isn't for another few weeks.

I had a polyp on my cervix in pregnancy but no one seemed concerned about it and the midwife that found it said it didn't look cancerous or anything. I had a smear 6 months after pregnancy and it clearly wasn't there anymore as nothing was mentioned.
I think they are almost always benign.

I had one - also picked up on smear - which I knew nothing about. Referred to gynae and booked for day surgery. Very short op under ga but told afterwards that the polyp had come away by itself prior to surgery Hmm
Post surgery my hormones were all over the place, loads of hot flushes etc but apart from that the op was problem free and a month later was back to normal.

By a month later I mean the hormones. In terms of general recovery it was just the ga to recover from so a day or two.

Had two removed under local anaesthetic, took about an hour all in, went home on the bus, no problem.

I also had one that was noticed during pregnancy. After I had my baby the gp referred me to the hospital and the doctor there offered to remove it straight away without any need for anaesthetic. Polyps have 'stalks' and can sometimes be removed just by twisting. Anyway it was nothing to worry about.

I had one, came out with a twist.

Very common and nothing to worry about.

Very reassuring thanks all, will be glad when's it's all sorted, nothing worse than people needing to rummage in your nether regions!

Hi newbie here

Barrygetamoveon (great name!) did the local hurt? Do you mind telling me about he actual procedure please. Going through the same thing at the moment. And a little freaked out. Would rather have local but seiously contemplating general. Also did they dive you sedation drugs to help relax you?

Thanks

I had polyps removed recently. Luckily I was under sedation. It was done in theatre though, so I couldn't eat beforehand, wore a gown and got up on a bed etc. Knocked out cold and woke up when it was all done. I felt completely fine. People warned me I'd feel funny afterwards but I felt fine. Slept it off and was 100% fine by the next day. Hardly even bled.

Hi AguacateMaduro

Thanks for the info it's very reassuring. When you say under sedation do you mean a full general Anaesthetic?

AguacateMaduro · 18/06/2017 23:42

I had a general, but it's not such a big deal. They weighed me, gave me no more than was required, i woke up as i was being wheeled out and the next day i felt completely fine, but i know we're all fearful of general anaesthetics

Thanks AguacateMaduro.
