What sort of discharge? Could it be thrush.

I remember that I started having some dark cream discharge at about 11 (a few months after having the 'periods' talk at school). I started wearing pads as I thought it was my periods...I think I was 13-14 when I properly started my periods....

Probably isn't the latter - but could be a sign that her body is starting to mature - given that these things are starting earlier and earlier these days....

My dd is 8 and i've noticed discharge in hers, she says it's not itchy, and i said to make sure she's wiping properly. She's getting very moody too. Surely it/s too early??

Hi,

Well when I was a kid 10 was young for periods, but actually these days girls start on average at 9! that means some are earlier.
You need to "have the talk2 if you havent, and also make sure she is wiping properly.
Other discharges might be thrush, or other fungus infections? Talk to your daughter, see if there are any other symptoms and keep an eye. I wouldnt worry her with Dr immediately, you wouldnt want to scare her, worry her, but just ask her things like does she itch, etc.
But it is possible at 7...early but young.

she has had thrush before, no sign of it now. recently had some urine infections, need to send another sample off to the lab, will do that tomorrow.

but it really does look like pre-menstruation discharge.

damn, was hoping not to do the 'talk' just yet. she has recently put on a bit of weight, very puppy fat, even though her diet is healthier than ever. she is only just 7 as well, last week.

My dd (7 in 2 weeks time) sometimes has a very small amount of cream marking on her knickers. She does often get a sore vulva which I treat successfully with sudocrem but I don't know if that ties in with marks on her knickers.

DG, thats basically what happens with dd1, but she has had thrush before, so we use canasten. hasnt had any infections for agees though.

and no eczema in her nether regions either atm.

I am assuming it is normal. She wont thank me for saying this, but she does play with herself a lot and I suppose I just assumed she was stimulating some secretions....

misdee · 15/03/2007 22:05

yes, i think dd1 has been fiddling as well. dont tell her i said that lol.

I had this from about the age of 9! But didn't start my period until I was 12. Don't panic.

misdee · 15/03/2007 22:07

i was about 10, 12 when started. how long should i leave the talk?

I'd wait for the door slamming to crank up a bit tbh

My opinion on "the chat" well i dont have a daughter although I do have three sons. I have to say as well I am a trained teacher and have been a nanny etc too so loads of experience. I have to say we do not have any taboo subjects in our family. I have always told them about facts of life. you may think having boys that I dont have to do this...wrong! I want them to grow up to be good caring, sympathetic men! My oldest is 13 and we do talk about when his female friends are ratty it may be something like this. to the extent that his female friends will now confide in him as they think he is sympathetic and caring! Most boys would poke fun and make them feel bad...dont you think this is best? So therefore its never too early to use an age appropriate book and treat it factually. I realise I may be unusual...at the school all the parents were squirming, I have never been embarrased! I say its a function like going to the loo! So trat it is such! Dont make it a big issue but knowledge is definately power!
I remember when I got my first period aged 10 I was terrafied and definately not prepared! Good luck!

misdee · 15/03/2007 23:48

i want her to be prepared, but not overwhealmed. dont they cover it at scdhool around age 10? i think it needs to be done at home really. any idea on books suitable?
