further to my previous thread on my lovely teeth, I've been advised would need 6 veneers. Heard anecdotally that they may not last long, crowns may be better and that you sign up for a life-time commitment asteeth underneath are shaved!
waht to do? my teeth are horribly crooked currently and are the bane of my life!

just to add I have consulted a dentist already (he didn't mention crowns nor any particular problems with veneers other than the fact that he hatedto be shaving 6healthy teeth and I should go the brace route)
also had tons of advice too from COMEOVENEER et al-thank you again.
Would like to hear from anyone else who's had it done-any regrets/problems? thanks!

Veneers can look really good if done well. I would never have crowns unless the tooth was in really bad condition.

Yes its a teeny bit off the front of your tooth much a crown would be a lot more.

Have you looked into the possibility of having them straightened?

madmarchhare · 15/03/2007 14:48

x posts there!

I would go the orthodontic route then if it has already been suggested.

i have crowns and tbh would have preferred veneers. i'm always worrying one will fall out and i'll look gappy and have to spend tons replacing them.

RanToTheHills · 15/03/2007 14:50

yes,i thought that about crowns too.Was talking to someone (dental technician?)in asurgery on phone yesterday who assured mevehemently that crowns were "better", I was a little but listened to what she had to say esp when she said veneers act like false fingernails, put me off rather!

(though my crowns have lasted 5 years so far)

RanToTheHills · 16/03/2007 12:45

why did you go for crowns over veneers? due to condition of teeth or you just thought they'd be more durable?

the dentist recommended them, my teeth were in a bit of a state! though whilst i was having them done by another dentist (as the other was on hol) he thought i should of had veneers, (just what i wanted to hear half way through treatment).

clumsymum · 16/03/2007 12:54

If the teeth are essentially healthy but crooked I'd look at getting them straightened (by braces or even surgery if that's an option). I thought veneers and crowns were for discoloured or damaged teeth.

If you have your own teeth straighetened you are just re-adjusting your own teeth. If you have them veneered or crowned they have to be damaged by the dentist first.

clumsymum · 16/03/2007 12:55

Oh, and I've had crowns for nearly 30 years, with very little by way of problems.

RanToTheHills · 16/03/2007 13:09

yes, i'm going to look into it but having had brace as teenager and previously been told would be yrs of brace for me as an adult, rather put-off!

I had 8 veneers done in 1999 and have had no problems with them at all. And no regrets. In fact if I were to get them done now I'd have 10 done and have them whiter .
Crowns weren't suggested as mine are for purely cosmetic reasons - teeth slightly crooked.

I was convinced that everyone would notice and no one did apart from my mother. I've only ever had one person comment on my teeth (hey, great teeth!) and interestingly enough an American (I so agree with them re the state of British teeth).

At the time I also looked at getting braces - lingual ones, so fitted on the inside of the teeth. But there were only 2 dentists (I think) in the UK who could do them well. I did consider going to a dentist in Paris (Didier Someone) as he was considered an expert on linguals). I've read that lingual braces are more commonly done now but don't know the ins/outs. Maybe an option if you don't want visible tracks?

The only concern I had about getting veneers was that I knew I'd have to have them replaced several times in my lifetime so needed to make sure that I'd always be in a position to afford this. So it's a no turning back solution on several fronts.

Only other thing I'd say is to go to a really good cosmetic dentist and one who does this the whole time. As opposed to a dentist that spends most of his time drilling and filling and does veneers on the side. There's a real art to get them looking good. Depends hugely on the lab they use as well.

Good luck.
