High blood pressure an

Hi everyone I'm just a bit shocked atm dh went to gp forceabally I may add as he was having symptoms for asthma and I made him have his blood pressure rechecked results were lungs ok (sepsis caused 70% loss of lung function ) but for the fourth time in a row he had measured high to very high blood pressure is gp correct in waiting to check his blood pressure again in 3 months time before putting him on blood pressure medication dh did lose a lot of weight recently cause he was getting mild to moderate chest pains.is it normal to wait that long before treatment (forgot to mention) he has a heart murmur that coupled with chest pain and high blood pressure is he at risk of damaging his heart

What was his BP?

4th time in a row? Chest pains? How old is he?
Some gps don't want to treat blood pressure aggressively but IMO this can be a good idea so I'd ask at the practice for a second opinion and a referral to a heart specialist. You can have a 24 hour monitor fitted by your gp which will take his pressure every 30 mins and you'd get some proper data. Sounds like you may have to insist that your DH goes along with any of this, too... but at least you'd have evidence for taking or not taking any medication or further action.

That's really not that high.

24 seems to me to be very young to be describing the symptoms you are describing. I'd definitely be asking to see a heart specialist. 160/97 is high IMO but if it is a random reading or if it is the highest in a series of others, it might not be a worry. 1st taken readings can be abnormally high. I think you should ask (insist) on a 24 hour machine reading if you have evidence for regular readings anywhere near 160/97. It's a very easy thing to arrange. The gp may suggest lifestyle changes before medication though (lose weight, reduce food with too much salt - does he eat a lot of fast food?). This is the problem with mumsnet diagnoses!

As February said, that isn't that high - not to be put on meds anyway, the doc is probably hoping a few subtle changes in lifestyle can bring that down. We wouldn't medicate patients at that level in my hospital trust. 140/90 is considered the high end of normal, so it is only just above that. We see some patients with BP at 190/120+ and they're not even on meds!
