What to feed an 11 month old with diorhea?

My little boy has had diorhea for the past 3 days, along with a cold. Up until yesterday he has been eating normally and drinking fluid and seems ok in himself. Yesterday a friend told me I should cut out his formula as this could feed any bacteria he may have? I'm not sure what to do? Should I give him dioralyte? Formula? What foods as he is still hungry? I'm waiting to hear from my Doctor, but just thought someone may have some advice.

When my eldest daughter had a bad stomach upset at a similar age (possibly a little younger, can?t remember exactly) I was very worried about dehydration etc. so called out the doctor. She told us to cut out all dairy products for a couple of days while she got over it as some children can become lactose sensitive when they have an upset stomach. It worked for us - kept her on water and very dilute orange juice. We were told not to worry about solid food for a few days and to just give her a little bit when she asked for it (as long as it didn?t go on without anything for too many days). I gave her a bit of toast, plain digestive biscuit etc. Try to avoid fruit as the citrus ones can upset their tummys and many other fruits, incl. dried can be laxative anyway. HTH

thanks for your advice. Are bananas best to be avoided?

Bananas are fine actually - they are 'clear foods' and I believe they can actually help to 'bind' the poo together - certainly my friend found that any bananas made her ds so constipated that she had to stop giving them. Cereal is also good - anything to bulk it out. I would avoid milk just for the moment.

I think plain boiled rice might be ok,(it's bulky and can help to 'push' the upset through)the liquid from cooking helps to bind the stools.

the herbal route might be an infusion of Self-heal(prunella vulgaris)3x a day

THere is something called the BRAT diet who when they are ill with the runs. It stands for bananas, rice apples and toast I think - someone else here will know I'm sure. A consultant told us to reduce the milk intake one suggest he made was to water it down if he refuses not to take water on its own.

Hope ge gets well soon

Another one for the BRAT diet (and yes Pollingfold's translation is the one I know). No dairy or formula. If ds will take dioralyte then fine. Ds1 took it, ds2 doesn't so he just gets ribena instead.

Must say at 11 months I just went for as many plainish foods as possible - I did include pasta (ds2 didn't like the texture of rice). Toast is tricky unless you have teeth. I'd try cereals (you can use water instead of milk) and then apple/pear/banana. If he's not chucking up you may even be able to keep his normal meals, just cut out fromage frais etc.

If he's drinking at all then he is fairly unlikely to get dehydrated, but if he can't ry etc then get him seen asap.
