repelling mosquitos by eating what?

I recently read somewhere about a natural mosquito repellent - eating lots of something that then gets secreted through the skin and is hated by mosquitos.. Only problem is that my brain has gone to jelly (toddler + new baby: where did my brain go?!?!?!???) and I can't remember for the life of me what it was or where I read it.. Only that I thought oh-that's-good-I'll-remember-that..
Can anyone help..?

Marmite

SoupDragon · 06/07/2004 23:52

Yeast tablets work too actually and don't taste as bad

I heard garlic works too, but you do stink of garlic when you sweat!!!

Like the sound of that - can toddlers eat those as well, do you know?

I don't know about the yeast tablets but they can eat Marmite.

Yep - although dd just stuck it on the wall last time I tried her with marmite (and not even in an artistic way)

b-complex tablet
any food high in b vitamins (hence marmite suggestions, not a good idea on holiday though as very high in salt which will dehydrate you even more in hot country). a tablet will give much higher doses than food, so probably more effective

cider vinegar (yuk! but does work).

if you're interested you can get a good spray from a health shop called Bioforce Neem Insect repellant. totally natural so safe for baby and toddler.

The woodland fragrance from Avon Skin So soft works too apparently.

or you can make your own after sun insect repellant using something unperfumed like E45 cream (which i favour) and as its going to be used for a baby, just lavender.

you could always make up some just for baby and another lot for the rest of you, using more essential oil.

let me know if you want the recipe

E45 LOTION not cream!!! eeeks!

Thanks for all these suggestions - great help..! The vitamin b sounds familiar - I think that's what it was that I remember reading.. And the Avon skin so soft: definitely works, I tried it..
The E45vwith lavender sounds good too (baby only has b milk still): rosies if you have it too hand, could I have the recipe..? That'd be great..

hmmm how old is your baby? i'm afraid under 3 months, topical application is not recommended... however, if its for a holiday, or at home i guess, you could put a drop of lavender on each foot of a babygrow, or even just on the mattress cover. this may repel mozzies and help baby sleep.

IF baby is over 3 months, you can use a blend of 2 drops lavender to 12 ml of e45 lotion. this is a 50% dilution. the toddler could use this too. it doesnt sound alot but pure oils are very potent.

as a precaution, watch for skin sensitivity, but it should be fine.

best wishes

Try a ladybug - you can get it from bloomingmarvelous. It emits a noise that is apparently like mating draginfly (practically inaudible to humans) which repels mossies. We've jsut come back from a week in spain and the kids have no vites, though my Mum who slept in the next room has loads.
