to be honest I told mine before we went that we were 'going to the docotrs for something that would make sure he would be really healthy and it would really help him and it might hurt a little' and then I pinched him and said 'no more than that' I told him that I knew he would be really brave and then we were going to buy a comic and go to the park.

this worked wonders for my boy - of course depends on teh child.

DimpledThighs · 14/03/2007 11:57

is it a booster?

kittylette · 14/03/2007 11:59

he would freak if i pinched him, hes a bit of a softie! i think its best i dont tell him,

my mum is coming with us and shes a good distraction, i feel so awful

My friend is a nurse, responsible for doing childhood vaccinations.

She reckons the worse children are those whose mums are clearly terrified, and have passed this fear on to their children. Closely followed by those who have not warned their children at all about what to expect.

Tell him what is going to happen "the nurse/doctor is going to put some medicine in your arm" and that it might hurt a little bit, but not for long. Fine to bribe with a chocolate button/sticker, IMO. And even if you do feel terrified.... don't let him know. HTH.

LucyJu · 14/03/2007 12:03

I meant worst .

kittylette · 14/03/2007 12:03

hmmm, right i will tell him, im not terrified per say, just a bit emotional - 'wish oi could take it for him' kind of thing.

right so off to the docs for some medicine in your arm.

thanks

pneumococcus?
dd2 watched while she had her mmr (she's 3, hadn't had any jabs since she was tiny)
buttons - afterwards

TinyGang · 14/03/2007 12:07

I told mine about a booster they were going to have once and they worried about it so I realised I shouldn't have said anything until they were about to have it.

In retrospect, best to say nothing much till you get there. It'll be quick. There might be a howl (and you'll feel awful too, even though it can't be helped)

Then go heavy on the cuddles/praise and yes sweeties on stand-by and a trip to the park are all very good for afterwards. Maybe the nurse will give a 'sticker' too for being brave. That's for ds not mummy; although I think we deserve one too

Good luck

TrinityRhino · 14/03/2007 12:10

the most trouble I had with a jab was with dd1 when she had the one they have just before school, she was 5 and terrified. I couldn't reason with her , she wouldn't stop howling. In the end I just held her tightly whilst she screamed.

kittylette · 14/03/2007 12:19

thanks for all the advice, we leave at 1 - so im going to tell him on the way - but not make a fuss and see what happens!

Good luck!

foxinsocks · 14/03/2007 12:23

good luck! yes, medicine in the arm - no-one likes injections (even I need sweets after one ).

Try and distract him too - hold him tight but say, 'oh look at the bird out the window' at the critical point so he doesn't see the needle going in (ds turned round and managed to grab it out of the nurse's hand!)

DimpledThighs · 14/03/2007 17:33

hope it went okay!
