Hi,
Has anyone on here suffered with ovarian cysts & had to have it removed before? What were your symptoms?
Mines 9cm left side.. causes bloating all the time, intermittent pain, I've had a dead leg from it, headaches, felt sick. I have ibs but the symptoms are very similar to that which doesn't help. I'm tired all the time. I have my operation next month and I'm definitely becoming more nervous as I get nearer to it.

MelaniaMacron · 11/05/2017 15:54

Sorry about the delay.. couldn't get online.

But it was fine. The GP told me that she needed me to come to see her so that she could urgently impress upon me the need not to worry. Errrrr, cheers Hmm

Thanks for all your support.

Reallybadday · 11/05/2017 16:21

That's great news. Smile

Sharl2017 · 11/05/2017 16:57

Hahaha oh bless you melania try not to worry anymore. Are they doing watchful waiting and seeing you in a couple of weeks to remeasure it?

MelaniaMacron · 11/05/2017 17:00

I've got a gynae referral. GP isn't sure whether he/she will recommend removal or not yet. Not sure of timescales.

Sharl2017 · 11/05/2017 22:37

It'll be the Gynae who decides so good luck melania! I've less than a month to go now... pooing my pants!

That's great news Melania - I've been wondering how you got on. Hope the referral comes through soon so you have a plan.

I have my scan on Tuesday. Do they give any indication at the scan usually? I'm going to be a wreck while I'm waiting for the report.

Sharl2017 · 11/05/2017 23:06

curtains I knew if mine hadn't shrunk by the time of my second scan they were going to operate from my first scan. She didn't want to tell me my measurements as it was obviously large but when she realised I remembered them from previous she gave in and told me. I'm pleased she did as it gave me time to mentally prepare myself and questions for when I next saw the consultant.

I had an ovarian cyst removed 2 years ago. It was a symptom of hypothyroidism for me. I didn't get diagnosed until 6 weeks post surgery. Fatigue is another big symptom of hypothyroidism. Have u ever had a full thyroid panel done?

MelaniaMacron · 12/05/2017 03:19

curtains Yes, each time they've told me the size. However, I suspect they may have done that only because the cyst didn't look cancerous. Whenever I've had bad new in other medical contexts, the radiographer has always been ominously silent, leaving it for the consultant to explain.

Kohl I didn't know that about thyroid issues! Fatigue is a real problem for me..

Sharl2017 · 12/05/2017 07:46

No I haven't kohi do they do more investigations if you've had more than one cyst or did they just find that out because you should have felt better by the 6 weeks?

I had one, was big, 15cm x 15cm, had it for years but was never diagnosed, kept getting admitted to hospital where they just said it was water infection. One night could feel the pains coming on and in the end had to call an ambulance as the pain was so bad I thought I was dying. Ended up going private (thank god because I didn't get a call from the NHS till 5 months after I went to A and E) but it was too big for keyhole so had to have open surgery. was ok though, the first few days after were painful but all in all not too bad. I got the surgeon to take photos of my cyst whilst doing the op as I was intrigued....looks like a babies head lol.

Kohi36 · 12/05/2017 15:58

I had to figure it out myself. I felt so awful after the surgery. They removed my ovary and my thyroid just completely tanked. I did lots of research and hypothyroidism kept coming up. I had to demand that my obstetrician get a thyroid panel done. She questioned why I needed it. Sure enough results come back one week later and sure enough I was hypothyroid and also had hashimotos! I would still be undiagnosed if I hadn't done my own research. They also removed my ovary without my consent. I only consented to cystectomy. Definitely get a full thyroid panel done. Stop the thyroid madness is a great resource, you will find info there regarding what needs to be tested and what optimal bloods are. Best of luck

Marvellousmarg · 12/05/2017 20:13

Had my scan. Cyst is still there and 4x5cm. They measured 25ml fluid! Guy said it does not look irregular so that's reassuring.

Thought I had no symptoms but since then I've been weeing more frequently. Could be a mental thing but that was symptom last time, it was pressing on my bladder.

Gah! Looks like I will need another op. Pissed off.

Reallybadday · 12/05/2017 21:23

Marvellousmarg, my sympathies. Symptoms hide until you know to expect them, don't they.
I think I'm probably in the same situation but I've been in denial and avoiding going back to the GP as I can't think about another op just now.

Itscurtainsforyou · 12/05/2017 22:12

Sorry to hear this Sad

I've had symptoms (bloating, wearing more/more urgently, etc etc) for a few months. I'm seeing that as cysts/whatever getting bigger as I never had these symptoms last time.

Has anyone found this or is symptom severity not necessarily related to size of cyst etc?

Sharl2017 · 13/05/2017 11:08

I've just received a copy of a letter the hospital have sent to my GP stating my surgery date and that I'm largely asymptomatic... I feel like shooting myself right now. That definitely means if they need to cancel one of the ops on the day... they'll choose me. WHY do I play my symptoms down when I'm around doctors?! Annoyed at myself & also annoyed that the symptoms I thought were my ibs are more likely to actually be the cyst and have definitely become worse since my last appointment.

Sorry for the rant I'm so annoyed and disappointed with myself Sad

Oh marvellous have they suggested op yet?

curtains it's not necessarily related to size. I have good and bad days, mines 9cm but someone at work had one that was 2cm and claims to have been in "soooo much pain" but my pain comes and goes & I suffer more with discomfort and bloating. Definitely pee more though!

OP posts:
Reallybadday · 13/05/2017 22:19

Sharl2017, can you get a GP appointment and update them on your increasing symptoms so they can pass it on to your consultant? You might also get a pre-op appointment with a nurse at the hospital (I did) and you can tell them.

Sharl2017 · 14/05/2017 12:31

badday Yeah ive got my preop appointment in 2 weeks so I'm going to tell them then I was just annoyed at the letter originally ha Hmm

Itscurtainsforyou · 14/05/2017 21:24

Quick question - when some of you say that symptoms are like ibs do you mean upset stomach etc? I've had that a bit recently and am now wondering if there's a connection.

Sharl2017 · 15/05/2017 06:00

curtains I've had ibs for years and take medication for it. My symptoms for that include bloating (also cyst symptom) constipation (cyst symptom).
I get discomfort and pain in my right side
& stomach cramps from it but associate any pain in my stomach area with ibs which is why my doctor thought me as asympathetic for my cyst when actually looking back my 'ibs' has been a lot worse since having the cyst.

OP posts:
Marvellousmarg · 15/05/2017 20:11

I guess the result will go to my GP then I may get further scans or MRI if they decide to operate. Not sure. They were "watchful waiting".

Marvellousmarg · 15/05/2017 20:12

It's up to gynaecology oncology I think.
