Is this normal!

It is supposed to stop bleeding/periods but didn't think it would work this quickly and immediately!

Great not to have a period but saw a story recently about a woman getting pregnant on the coil....

My periods stopped immediately - 7 years ago now. I also saw the photo of the baby holding the coil!

cushioncovers · 07/05/2017 19:42

Yep mine stopped pretty much straight away.

ForeverFearless · 07/05/2017 19:42

Thanks LtGreggs that's good to hear!

That photo totally freaked me out!

Thanks cushioncovers wow that's amazing. Wish I'd had it fitted ages ago now! X

I haven't had any periods for the 4.5 years I've had my mirena. Starting to get a bit of period type pain on a monthly basis in the last few months.

ForeverFearless · 07/05/2017 20:43

Thanks for replying ;)
Are/were any of you really hungry when it was first put in.

I just can't stop eating. So hungry all the time. Pls tell me it calms down!! X

Never noticed hunger!

BigGrannyPants · 07/05/2017 21:31

Mirena coil only lasts 5 years before it needs replacing. I had no periods for the entire time I had it but did put on loads of weight and was a bit erm ratty, loads of mood swings, my DH noticed the difference in mood when I had it put in and when I had it taken out

Acornantics · 07/05/2017 21:36

My periods stopped immediately too. After 5 years it's not clear what happens with regards to the hormone in Mirena, so it needs replacing with a new one. I'm at the 5yr stage and not sure whether to have it replaced or take a break.

I don't think there are adverse effects for me and I love the lack of periods, but I do get really bad pain at ovulation time (mittelschmerz), and I'd like to see if not having the mirena in makes a difference.

Sleeperandthespindle · 07/05/2017 22:45

It might be ovulation time for me actually, when I get pain.

My sports medicine consultant was a bit worried about lack of periods and potential effect on bone density. Turned out I don't have a problem with that, so didn't explore further. Maybe should have?

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 07/05/2017 22:53

Yes normal. Not had a period for 5 years. Did no one tell you this when you had it fitted?

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 07/05/2017 22:55

Hormonal side effects are minimised with mirena as it is very small dose of localised hormone, but you may get some, but they will hopefully settle. Likely to be no worse than what you would get in a normal menstrual cycle I.e. A bit of pmt etc

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 07/05/2017 22:57

Mirena doesn't effect bone mineral density, as it doesn't suppress ovaries enough to. The only one that MAY affect bmd is the depot injection

ForeverFearless · 08/05/2017 05:47

Cheers all

Hi random I had it fitted to minimise/stop periods but was told it could take 6 months and I might have bleeding on and off until then. Just didn't expect it to be immediate -but that's fine with me!

I was starving for a few months after getting it in. Put on about half a stone. In a couple of months. It did settle down after that though. Think it took a good few weeks for me to have my first period too and it was very light, more spotting really. It made me feel pregnant which was unsettling!

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 09/05/2017 21:01

I didn't have a single period since the day I had it fitted 5 years ago. Getting it removed on Thursday to ttc. I am dreading it as my cervix must be clamped tightly shut by now! 😳

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 09/05/2017 21:04

I would advise anyone with menstrual/bleeding problems to get one fitted - for me it was a minor miracle. It is a shame that the minority of people it doesn't suit are often the most vocal ones and put people off trying it. All the female gynaecologist/GPS I know have mirenas.

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 09/05/2017 21:08

And it is incredibly rare that you could get pregnant with a coil. As with the implant, most women who report getting pregnant on those are either pregnant when it's fitted, or did not abstain for the advised period after getting it fitted.

user1486076969 · 09/05/2017 21:09

I'm on my 2nd which means no periods for 10 years Grin. Not looking forward to removal later this year ....

Eve · 09/05/2017 21:12

I'm about to get my 3rd! No periods for 12 years ... It's great.

Acornantics · 09/05/2017 22:42

The only thing putting me off getting another one fitted is that the GP surgery doesn't now offer it as a service, so will need to go to local cosh clinic...which is open for two hours once a week, at a really inconvenient time for me.

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 09/05/2017 22:51

Acorn - I've found that my local clinic usually has more convenient times than my gp and I used to go there for fp purposes, but since then I have worked there so know all the staff! 😮 I have managed to find a female gp who will remove mine at my practice, but she has had to unofficially slot me in between telephone calls when she is supposed to be the duty doctor! Hope I don't go all peculiar...
