Sweeteners - bad for teeth?

I'm trying to cut out fruit juice from the family diet, as we drink it too much, and I know it is bad for teeth. None of us drink fizzy drinks, with the exception of a zero calorie sparkling water flavoured with elderflower. I particularly drink this as I dislike the taste of tap water in the area that we have moved to - I keep trying but haven't got used to the after taste of it.

My question is - are the artificial sweeteners in the sparkling water drink likely to be damaging to teeth? Is it just sugar (in whatever form) that is the worry, or do artificial sweeteners cause damage too?

If you've got any knowledge on this, please let me know - thanks.

Artificial sweeteners don't cause tooth decay, but (depending on whom you believe) they could be bad for your health in other ways.

I would stick to drinks containing xylitol and/or stevia. (The two "good" sweeteners)

Thanks MongerTruffle.

I've just checked the bottle, and the sweetener is sucralose - off to Google a bit more about that....

My specific concern is tooth decay, so I'm glad that sweeteners don't impact that, but I will start to look a bit more about which particular sweeteners are in things.
