Alopecia

Hey everyone,

Reaching out to any Mamas that have alopecia. 6 years ago I was diagnosed with alopecia areata after falling ill with Typhoid fever. Before becoming sick I never had any hair loss issues but now I constantly have patchy hair loss.
When pregnant with my DD all my hair grew back and stayed throughout breast feeding, when I stopped breast feeding my hair has fallen out again leaving me with patches of baldness.
I have long hair so the hair loss is not obvious when I wear my hair down but it really makes me miserable :(. I am just hoping to find someone on here to chat to who is in a similar situation and talk about successful or unsuccessful treatments.

Thanks in advance xx

I'm marking my place here. My 25 year old son is suffering badly with this.

Started at Christmas and everyday a new spot, it's making him very down and anxious.

X

@Charlie97 I'm 26 myself, i have tried l the steroid creams and everything which never seem to make any difference. Did your son ever have alopecia growing up?

Charlie97 · 05/05/2017 10:11

No, first started in December! He's trying everything! Nothing works, he's very upset with it all.

When did yours start?

MamatoA · 05/05/2017 11:37

Oh poor him :(, I totally understand how down it makes him feel. Mine started 6 years ago after a contracting typhoid (sorry I changed my user name I am the person who did the original post). I have tried so many things. I may go a month where it all grows back and then suddenly i loose a patch again! I'm wondering if I will have to live with it my whole life or it will disappear back to were it came from! X

You need to get a biopsy of the area to see if the tissue/follicles are damaged or if hair will grow there again. I was watching a programme about a man getting hair implants the other night. The Consultant explained that when men go bald they are usually left with a horse shoe shape of hair that remains and the DNA in that section of hair is different to the top of the head. The patient was getting hair from the horse shoe section transferred to the top. It grafts together when healed. It is expensive but the patient was delighted with the outcome.

If there is too much damage to the follicles, the steroids won't work.

He's been back to drs today, new cream, blood tests thyroid and hormones. Referral to a specialist!

It's the not knowing how far it will all go that causes stress!
