Why do I wake up feeling so tired some days?

I'm 30, fairly fit and have no weight issues. I take vitamin D and b supplements regularly. I go outside for a walk nearly every day. I've been to the doctors about this a couple of times in my life and had blood tests done to rule out anemia.

I just wake up some mornings and know I'm going to be tired the whole day. My brain is foggy and my limbs feel heavy. It comes out of nowhere, I can't pinpoint any cause. To my knowledge this has been happening since I was a teenager.

The tiredness seems unconnected to how much sleep I've had the night before. It isn't depression and it isn't SAD (as it happens in the summer too).

Any ideas of what it could be? It's not an urgent problem, it doesn't happen all the time. Some years it seems to happen more than others. It's just a pain in the arse when it does happen and I'm out of ideas about what it could be and what else I can do to try and stop it happening.

Have your thyroid checked. It could be under active.

Have you always felt like that BlueSun? You say some years are better? Not trivialising I hope but maybe you are just not a morning person, comparing yourself to advert women who leap out of ironed duvets in gleaming knickers and have orange juice in a jug at the table for breakfast? If you have young children it's normal to be tired and ratty, or if you have a demanding job and work late? Alternatively, are you eating enough protein, are you drinking enough water, taking exercise etc?

I've been like this since I was a teenager, so before dc. It isn't just mornings, it lasts all day. It's like an extreme tiredness. I have it today which it was I posted. My diet is quite good. I will book a doctors and ask about my thyroid. Would I have any other symptoms?

I've looked up underactive thyroid and I do have all the symptoms except for the weight gain. Don't know if that means it's unlikely but I will ask for a test.

What about iron and ferratin levels?

skyzumarubble · 01/05/2017 20:49

My sil has an under active thyroid and she's super thin - you don't have to gain weight. Took her a while to get diagnosed.

Are you sure you actually sleep well? If you wake up for less than thirty seconds, you often don't even remember in the morning. So a person can be waking up constantly all night and not even realise. Similarly you could be a light sleeper and not getting the deep sleep you need to truly refresh your brain.

You could try downloading one of those sleep apps you lay on the bed and it tracks your sleep (via your movements) to gain some insight into how well you are sleeping.

BlueSunGreenMoon · 01/05/2017 22:13

Thanks for all the suggestions. No I really don't think it's me not sleeping well. When I had it in my teens and had no responsibilities, if it happened on a weekend I would sleep nearly the entire weekend day and night. I'd have some food and go back to sleep. In my dd's first two years of life - especially her first - she was a terrible sleeper and as a result I slept badly and was constantly tired. It's a very different kind of tiredness to this.

I'm not sure about iron and ferratin - when I had blood tests they ruled out anemia which I think means my iron levels must be ok? I will ask about thyroid though as all the symptoms apart from weight are a complete match.

What I mean is, in my teens if I got it I certainly had enough sleep to make it go away had that been the issue, but it didn't fix it. I know over sleeping can make you tired but I had it before I overslept if you see what I mean.

Because you're not hitting deep sleep during the night?

When I track it I find the nights I get 0% deep sleep and all light and rem sleep I'm tired all day.

Ekphrasis · 02/05/2017 16:18

I've never put on weight when ever I've been underactive (thyroid). In fact I was worryingly thin and sleeping all the time, plus constipated when diagnosed at a young age.

You actually loose muscle mass and weight gain is only slight due to fluid retention. I was quite under and I'll after ds again and once again I lost a lot of weight and was very weak. I also barely wee, which is the fluid retention I think, plus I was bf then.

I'd get it checked out. I realised I'd probably had slightly low levels most of my life.
