Does anyone know how to find the nit nurse service?

I am a very hands-on Granny and often take care of my grand children aged 9,8 and 7. The girl who is 8 is scratching her head again and I'm sure its those little visitors and I'm at my wits end as my son and DIL are always putting those insecticides on the childrens heads and I know its not good for them. Someone mentioned a nit-nurse service in schools on MN and I cant remember their name. can anyone remember as I think it would just ease things all round if everyone in the school was checked and treated if necessary. Thank you

Not myself, but my friend's daughter is in a school which they attended. She was very happy.

You don't need to treat them with chemicals. It is possible to get rid of the visitors with conditioner alone.

nappyaddict · 13/03/2007 03:56

i have been told grapefruit seed extract is good for getting rid of nits.

CiaoBella · 13/03/2007 13:43

Hello. Nappy addict, what does the grapefruit seed extract do? Does it loosen the glue which holds the nit? Can you buy it? The frustrating thing for me is that it takes such a long time to clear a head with combing, which is obviously preferable to chemicals. Then, no sooner do the children go back to school than they catch it again!! Eddie M if you are still there today, can you tell me anything more about the hair detectives? The web-site is very interesting but doesnt say what method they use precisely, except that no chemicals are used.

The hair detectives have a lot of different kit for getting them out mechanically. No "stuff" goes on the hair. They were really good. I'm trying to get out head to get them into my daughters school. My friend said the relief was amazing after they had been, knowing there were no lice in the school. All that shame and finger pointing went away.

it is similar to tea tree oil but better. this is what my mum swears by. add 20 drops of GSE to 1 cup of water. to the amount of shampoo used (tea tree is best) use a half of that amount of the GSE solution and mix in with the shampoo. throughly massage into hair and scalp. Leave to work for 20 mins. Rinse the hair well and comb.

CiaoBella · 13/03/2007 15:41

Thank you Nappy addict. Does it get the nits or just the ones with legs? Eddie M, yes I should imagine the relief would be immense if you knew that you wouldnt have to worry who your child sat next to!! How do the hair detectives keep the children quiet? Isnt it a bit distressing for them?

oh sorry not sure about that ... but i know that's all my mum ever used - she couldn't afford the expensive chemical lotions. she used to get it from the chemist - don't know if you still can, but i just bought a big bottle off ebay. was quite expensive at £10 but should last a while.

CiaoBella · 13/03/2007 18:16

Thank you again Nappy addict. It sounds like a nice thing to put on hair. It probably smells nice too. Ebay's a bit beyond me as I'm a granny and this site is my latest achievement. Is it hard to find? Eddie M, are you a man? Usually its women on this site, isnt it?

there are quite a few dads around, duno if eddie m is one of them. you can probably get it in chemists or health food shops.

Aloveheart · 13/03/2007 18:29

I thought that they weren't allowed nit nurses now as they are not allowed to touch childrens hair???? They've never had a nit nurse in their school. I hate them to pieces. Thankfully mine ahven't had them for a while but i still check. Conditioner and nit comb is teh best repeat every other day.
