I was referred to an osteoporosis clinic as I had some bone scans done and showed only 75% of the normal bone density in my hips and 85% in my spine. These were done o/seas btw.

Long story how I got to have the scans, but my diet, genetics other factors involved. Also my serum level for calcium is below normal range. I've also lost over an inch in height in the last 2 years.

The consultant I saw was extremely dismissived (very old school I guess said things like "I have women in here completely hunched over with Osteo."..) I didn't ever say I had it, just discussed with GP who was concerned enough to refer me. He's thoughts were 1 - everyone has different bone density, this is probably normal for me, 2 - an inch is nothing, he'd start worrying when it was 2 inches (do I keep measuring?!), 3 - if I'm still having periods etc then I'm fine, 4 - Just because milk gives me the runs and stomach ache it's very foolhardy to just stop drinking it. Didn't believe that soya was even worse.

What do you think? The whole point was that I want to do something NOW (sorry, bit upset) rather than wait til I'm postmenopausal and breaking wrists at the turn of a lid...

Am I worrying too soon? I'm 36 and I didn't want drugs or anything, but surely there's a plan I could be following. There's loads of stuff on diets etc on the net, but not sure if it's worth it.

All advice welcome!

yes, get a 2nd opinion - go back to your GP and tell him what the consultant said to you and ask him to refer you to someone else (prob worth repeating the scans too I would have thought)

I have some osteoporosis of the spine, confirmed by scan, am post menopausal, but NICE guidelines say that only women over 70 (I think)can have treatment. I suppose I will be in pretty bad shape by the time I get to that age. It is scary isn't it.

Hi Jackaroo,

Below are details of the National Osteoporosis Society:-

www.nos.org.uk

If you haven't already done so to date I would contact them as well.
