nappy rash

Hiya,

DD2 had had really bad nappy rash for about 5 months out of her 7 month life! poor little chicken.

The doc/ hv says the same old thing every time i ask what to do to help her: air the bum, put nappy cream on, dont put nappy cream on, wash with water only etc etc.

She seems to be getting better then it flares up again at the slightest thing such as a poo, or if she scratches it.
Which is why i find it hard to air her bum because she scratches it till it bleeds!

Has anyone tried any really magical creams/ treatments. It's been going on so long that she seems really run down by it now.

My son had bowel surgery at seven weeks. I had no idea nappy rash could be so bad. In hospital they recommended metanium cream sparingly applied to the red areas then cleaning with cotton wool and olive oil. The idea is you don't clean off the metanium you just wipe the wee/poo off the top of it. I found you needed to reapply the metanium every other change.

Now we have it totally under control. Sudocrem after every change. Metanium last change of the day only if it looks a bit angry, by morning it has calmed down.

You'll get lots of advice on this one. I suggest you try whichever method for a week at least to give it a chance. Stop of course when you find the one that works for you. Hope mine helps (well Bristol Children's Hospitals actually). x

PS. If the rash has a white coating it may be thrush--see GP for cream.

Right. Now I am about to become a nappy rash bore.

Have just re-read your post. I'll stick to my original advice if the rash is actauuly in her 'downstairs department' (sorry but I cannot think of a better phrase!!)

If the itchy/scratchy area is on the back of her bottom (where wee and poo don't normally reach) then get hold of some Eumobase. Slap it on till the scratching stops then use it as and when. I reckon itching here is due to getting hot and sweaty under a nappy. My son also get's itchy behind his knees and this cream has stopped it dead.

That's enough from me, I promise.

Thanks curry

it's on her front/ ' fanny' not the back of her bum.
I've used sudocrem but it really dries her skin so then it cracks!

will check out metanium

thanks x

both my dds have had nappy rash really badly and I must say metanium worked a treat in both cases.

nappyaddict · 13/03/2007 04:00

the only things that work for my ds' nappy rash are:

emu oil
grapefruit seed extract
honey
egg white
germoline
morhulin
nystan
aveeno
sprilon (i got the last 3 on prescription though)

Had similar with my ds - having found nothing worked, then found out he was milk protein intolerant. Removed milk from his diet and suddenly - no nappy rash....

It is always worth thinking about checking if lactose or milk protein intolerant in children with severe nappy rash.

bellarosa · 19/03/2007 21:57

Thanks

Nappyaddict Did you just apply emu oil to the skin of=r give it orally as a suppliment? as have both!
And the egg white? did you whisk it?
Willing to try anything!
Also mum03 did your bub have any other simptoms of lactose intolerance? DD doesnt really have much but i eat milk, cheese etc and she could get it through breastmilk possibly...?

kittypants · 02/06/2007 12:07

ds has it bad on and off,we recently found he has ezcema so dont think that helps!we use metanium cream but the best advice i got was raw silk nappy liners!they work amazingly well!

nappyaddict · 05/06/2007 00:23

apparently there's a cream called thovaline which is good too but you will have to get it ordered in at a lot of chemists.
