Which has turned out to be scarlet fever and now my ds has impetigo and is ill as anything

to make things better - the antibiotics prescribed him today- essential in scarlet fever have been vommed all over kitchen and bathroom

he is contagious until he has taken anti biotic for five days and has to avoid people etc and not go back to nursey,.,,, would it not have been better for all my freinds and family who have been mauling him all weekend if we had known this....

Grrrrrr.... i know the nhs is under stress but he was head to toe in a rash on friday with raging fever and doc barely glanced at him!

NAO- know exactly where you are coming from, have had 2 occasions like this recently:

1.) Go home its a virus (with an uncontrollable temp), 48hrs later he was admitted with pneumonia.

2.) Ds rubbin head on floor, temp, 100% sure it was ear infection: 'Go home it's a virus'
2 days later uncontrollable temp and bilateral otitis media needing a/bs.

So I sympathise!

Over 40 years ago, I was diagnosed, (well, my mm was told) over teh phone, "it's just a rash, she'll be ok." Fortunately, another doctor in teh practice found out and came out to see me. That was also scarlet fever.

So, sadly, it's not a new thing. Hope your littel boy is ok soon.

NAO, How very Victorian! (and how annoying and worrying for you)
It pisses me off when they don't listen to you, the mother, who knows when something is just not right.

I never go to the doctors unless I am seriously worried, and have tried all the obvious routes first (ie calpol, rest, fluids blah blah.) last time we got the 'it's just a virus' treatment, ds ended up in hospital for 2 weeks - with meningtis. I had been to the doctor's twice in 2 days saying I was really concerned.

Novacain, your poor ds too

zippitippitoes · 11/03/2007 21:06

is it scarletina or scarlet fever?

I tyhink the former is hard to diagnose without the rash..I was similarly dismissed with it although i wa scertain that was what it was and on my returen visit it was picked up

hope he is better soon

onlyjoking9329 · 11/03/2007 21:06

DH taken into hospital, memory loss confusion headache & vomiting, they told him it was migraine and refused to do the brain scan our GP requested, brain scan 3 weeks later showed a brain tumour]angry]

NotanOtter · 11/03/2007 21:07

My ds1 had this recently, its a horrible one, hope that your ds responds quickly to the abs, I am sure he will, but it must be really irritating for you, that they missed it

onlyjoking9329 · 11/03/2007 21:31

we were not too happy, i guess he is doing ok , but not sure how it is going to progress .
i hope your DS feels better soon and that you don't have to cclean up anymore sick

NotanOtter · 11/03/2007 21:33

It's dreadful isn't it, because as well as them being really ill, they look so ill. My ds had the Strawberry tongue and peeling fingers and toes
But, he felt so much better as soon as he got treatment Keep us posted

lemonaid · 11/03/2007 21:57

It took three visits with DS (between 2 weeks old and a month) to get a referral to a paediatrician, a diagnosis of whooping cough, and admittance to hospital on supplementary oxygen. And, again, checking up afterwards he had absolutely classic symptoms . So I sympathise entirely. I hope your DS does manage to keep the antibiotics down and start to feel a bit better soon.

NotanOtter · 11/03/2007 21:59

thankyou everyone!
yes overrun he had bloody horrible tongue - i had tried bonjella and he SCREAMED!

Experienced this too. 3 visits to GP to be told 'it's a virus, nothing we can do, just give calpol' while ds1 faded away in front of our eyes. Eventually took him to A&E where he was speedily diagnosed with a severe pneumonia and was straight on to oxygen and IV antibiotics and admitted for 5 days (and monitored for the next 12 months as his weight had dropped so dramatically). Crap innit?

NotanOtter · 11/03/2007 22:07

you poor thing gobble
