Nits how to prevent them??

I know nits are going strong so just wondered
should I start combing DS and DD1 hair now or only when they have lice? Is nitty gritty comb the best/worth money or do I stick with my cheap plastic one? Do you use tea tree shampoo/conditioner? Do I comb when hair is wet or dry? with or without conditioner?

Tea tree shampoo & Conditioner - yes

Use every single time and it might, just might prevent the little blighters

You can also buy a spray to put on but it didn't stop my DD getting them

I use a "bug buster kit" which you get on prescription - 2 types of comb, one for nits and one for eggs

Wash hair, leave conditioner (tt) on for as long as poss - let them have a lovely long play with it on as it smothers the nits then comb out (with cond in) and then rinse.

I comb dd's hair twice a week with a simple plastic nit comb after her bath without fail ever since we had a letter from school re nits. I also insist she wears her hair up at school. That way hopefully she won't get them or if she does I will pick it up asap and so it will be (fingers crossed) a small infestation.

Agree do the tea tree shampoo & conditioner every time with the nit comb, just in case.

Tie up long hair for school. This may/may not help, but I do just in case.

I spray mine liberally with this too before we leave the house for school/parties/contact with other children. You can get it in Wilkinsons in a slightly different bottle for about £1.89.

It not a guarantee but it seems to have worked so far for us.

I swear by pure tee tree oil, a few drops 6-8 in a bottle topped up with water, and sprayed on scalps each morning and after a bath, we had huge nit problems time and time again before this, now not a nit in sight for over 12 months.

can do pure tea tree oil as I have it in for the cloth nappies may add some to a little spritzer bottle. Thanks all.

nitty gritty is the best (esp once you know you've got them)

but if you/kids have very fine hair, it still doesn't work on it and you have to manually check v v carefully (total PITA!)

don't bother combing till you've got them - it's such a nightmare, leave it till you have to!

grapefruit seed extract is better than tea tree.

I use the "bug buster" kit too (got it on prescription, but had to wait a few days for the chemist to get it in. Actually the Doctor didn't know what it was until he looked it up)

It's great for the actual lice, but have yet to find anything that can actually remove the empty egg cases (nits). It's quite some glue they produce.
