Lump in breast - very scared

A couple of weeks ago I woke up with a horrendous pain in my left breast, I couldn't bear to touch it myself, let alone a doctor, I can't tell you how much it hurt, the day after, the pain had subsided a little and I found that it was very tender around the nipple area and the skin looked pinched, as the days went by and the pain lessened I realised that there was a lump, the pain has gone completely now but the lump is still there. I went to the doctor's last week and she examined me and gave me some antibiotics as she suspected an infection, however, I have worked myself up so much, I have just been back and seen another doctor who said come back when you have finished the course of antibiotics, I'm so scared that I have breast cancer, I have made myself physically sick, I'm a nervous wreck and will be until my appointment on Monday. I have been told that is it was cancer it wouldn't have hurt like that and also the lump would be deeper, and that it is very unlikely at the age of 26, but I'm not so sure, at the moment I can feel it under the skin, please if someone has had something similar reply to me.x

mum2jay - sorry you're so worried. Breast lumps are nearly almost always benign, especially so at 26 I would have thought.

I haven't had sypmtoms like yours but have had a lump which turned out just to be a benign fibrous thing.
It sounds like yours was caused by an infection as the pain was so sudden and intense and passed quite quickly. If it was something more sinister the pain would have come on gradually and would not go away with antibiotics. The lump is probably caused by a blocked duct which is why it got infected in the first place.
I know it's easy to say try not to worry but it really doesn't sound like you have anything nasty.

mum2jay, I haven't experienced this personally but my mum is going through the exact same thing as you at the moment, except that she is a couple of weeks further on. Her doctor said it was most likley a cyst and gave her antibiotics. She went back after taking the antibiotics and although the inflammation was reduced the lump was still there so he sent her for a mammogram and a biopsy. That was 4 weeks ago tomorrow and she is still waiting for the results, watching the post every day and worrying herself sick.
You're right, at your age it is unlikely to be cancer, but I quite understand why you've got yourself in such a state. Is there any way you go privately and get this sorted out quickly?
Big virtual hugs to you - stay positive. CM x

As far as I am aware, most cancerous breast lumps are painless - it really does sound like an infection to me too, try not to worry xx

My dd - in her teens - had similar to this and it turned out to be, would you believe, an insect bite! How the insect got there I don't know.

MUM2JAY, Are you breastfeeding . I sometimes get a lump and a painful breast if i feed to much from one breast. Then it goes down when i start feeding. When it first happened I thought it was cancer as well!!

Thanks for your reassuring messages...I don't want to sound thick here but if it was cancer, the pain would not have gone away with or without the antibiotics would it? I don't drink, smoke - quite boring really, since I had my ds - now nearly 3. I have looked on the breast cancer site and don't fit into any of the 'higher risk' categories. I probably am over-reacting but its been one thing after another lately, my FIL died from cancer last year, I have recently found out I have polycyctic ovarian syndrome, last week my partner got made redundant and now this, sorry, just feeling sorry for myself and having a moan!!x

Its allowed!!

Poor you, you don't need anything else to worry about do you?
You're right, if it was cancer and was causing pain then that would not go away unless you'd had specific treatment for it which had worked or weer taking serious painkillers.
So it seems like it isn't.
Good luck.

mum2jay, 9 out of 10 breast lumps are NOT cancerous, so I do hope that includes you. sorry you're having such a tough time, x
