Does anyone have any tips for putting eye drops in a 2yo?

My poor little ds has conjunctivitis (sp?) we have been given eye drops but he freaks every time I try to put them in - usually meaning he is crying so the drops don't stand a chance.

Anyone have any tips/ experience?

I don't think there's any other way than just pinning him down and forcing them in. Sounds awful but it has to be done. The nurse at the hospital even used this tactic on dd the other day so don't feel too bad about it!

If bribery works then that's a good one too. A chocolate button or something if they have their drops but they are normally so hysterical with drops that I find you have to be cruel to be kind.

Good Luck!

My doctor asked me if I'd seen the old joke about giving a cat a pill.

He said it was very similar to giving a baby eye-drops.

He said to wrap child tightly in towel, get one person to hold on to towel and baby with their legs, whilst holding the eye open with their fingers. Get other person to drop drops in eye.

He said it is even better if you can get three people to help.

fwiw, when ds had eye drops, he stopped crying the second they were put in and we all let go.

Good luck

DS had had to have eyedrops every day since he was 3. he is now 8yo, we started with a similar method to squonk and it did get easier.only other think is if they do get upset, if they cry too much you can was all the eye drops out so be quick. Take two, 1 to pin down and one to give the drops then distract really quickly so have a little prize ready so if they do cry all you hard work isnt washed away. If you do get poads of tears befroe you have given the drops, dry their eyes give them a while to settle down and prepare to launch your attack again.

So glad to hear you all adminster drops the way I do - some of my (childless) friends think I'm v.cruel when they see me do it but it's the only way I've found that works!

slowreader · 09/03/2007 09:09

It is much much easier if you do it in the dark, or as dark as possible. It doesn't sting so much either and they do not screw up their eyes so much and blink it out again.

I
had this prob, i read on the net to put them in the corner, on the skin nearest the nose, whilst you get kiddies to have their eye closed.

AND it works, they open there eys, drop goes in down the little slope!!

Also, my d had conjunctivitis, and gp said that it normally goes of its own accord, as long as you bathe, and that drops aren't always necessary.

Needless to say, I stopped the drops, and a few days later it was gone.

try the corner of the ey trick, its not such a shock on the eyeball.

fryalot · 09/03/2007 09:14

Doctor also said that you can't overdose on conjunctivitis drops, so if you don't think they've gone in (and you can face it) put some more in.

pmsl pirate girl - thought you were saying to put the child in a corner!! - could try though

have tried the second dose since this morning and had to pin him down. felt like a cow but he doesn't seem to have held a grudge.

will def try corner of the eye trick next!

also, you should start with alternating eyes, because you always seem to manage to get more in 1st eye than second. That's what I was told anyway.

I got my trick from people on here (thank you!!!)
Lie them down with their feet away from you (I get DH to hold her feet) and put their arms over their head.
Then kneel either side of their head so their arms are squashed against their head and holding it still.
Then apply drops!

Having read that back it looks awful but after a couple of days DD just lies there quietly whimpering and lets me get on with it as she has no choice!
