How do you make a stubborn 22 month old take his medicine?

DS is 22 months old and has been prescribed amoxicillin(?) for an infection which he has to take 3 times a day. He refuses to take medicines off a spoon, syringe etc. We had a half hour screaming match tonight that resulted in most of the medicine being spat out.

Is it ok o mix it with a bit juice? That's how I normally give him his Calpol. I know it's not the best method but anyway is better that not at all. Any ideas?

What happens if you give him the syringe and get him to do it himself?

HaggisSupper · 09/03/2007 00:48

He squirts it everywhere He loves to draw at the moment and everything is a pen to him.

He really is a strong willed little boy and I want to try and avoid the hysterics of tonight again if I can.

We have noticed that if we "point" the syring towards the side of the cheek DS is less likely to spit it out. I think there shouldn't be a problem with mising them with a bit of juice as long as you don't heat it and ensure that the full course is completed.

The other way is... cohortion, give him a sticker everytime he takes it or promise him to buy him X toy once the course has been completed.

HTH

You know, this might sound daft but I was just lurking on the pets thread and there isadvice about grinding down tabs into cats/dogs food, what about syringing it into a queen cake?

Chandra · 09/03/2007 00:51

ah, and another thing, if he is already too upset, leave it and insist again in a few minutes.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/03/2007 00:52

What if mum or dad has a syringe full first? (of water of course!)

Mhamai · 09/03/2007 00:53

Oops, only meant for daytime tho.

Bribery works in this house, the only time he gets chocolate

Slight hi jack, did you see the xmas photos that Aero put up in chat VVVQV, your solo pic is lovely!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/03/2007 00:56

No i didnt! Will have a look! Ta!

HaggisSupper · 09/03/2007 00:58

I've tried bribery, but it doesn't work with him yet

I managaed to get a spoonful of Calpol to his mouth last night, only because my 10 month old dd was getting one (they should paint a red cross above our door!) but once he realised what it tasted like he was having none of it and spat most of it back out. I just wish he was a bit older so he could understand it's for his own good.
