White discharge in 4yr old dd

Hi, my dd said that her 'pee-pee' hurt this morning and when I had a look I found that she has a white discharge around her vagina, which seems quite red internally. The white discharge was sort of crusty and looked like fine sugar. (Sorry if too much information.) Is this thrush? I've heard of it but never had it myself. Should I take her to the doctor? I'd be grateful for any advice please because she's our only child and apart from dd I don't have much experience with children!! Thanks!!

Sounds like it could be a urinary infection. I would definitely take her to the doctor asap as she might need antibiotics.

PS - could be inflamed if she's been rubbing it because it is itchy which I seem to recall can be another sign of UTI.

Thanks Mumpbump. Have made an appt with doc for tomorrow, but have been reading other threads in meantime, and I wonder if I could have made a mistake? The other threads refer to sugar-like crystals having come from nappies and it was first thing in the morning when I inspected her! (She still wears a nappy at night.) Still a bit of redness but no discharge since I dunked her in a bath (plain water, no bubbles)this morning. Bump!

The nappy crystals are a little like silica gel if you've ever seen that. I don't think you could confuse that with a white 'discharge'. Get thee to a doctors if it's not too much trouble and she's not in too much discomfort.

Oops, didn't notice the 'have made an appointment' bit!

slap some canestan or drapolene on in the meantime

Thanks songbird and morning paper (very compatible names as it happens!!). Will definitely keep the appointment just to make sure, as a ui is likely because she has to be encouraged to drink all the time. (It was more of a 'crust' than a discharge with little crystals in it btw but I panicked a bit when I saw it to be honest so not entirely sure now!!)
