He had his last immuniations (4 month ones but was 7 months at time) about 5 weeks ago since then he's been snotty.
The last 2 nights he has woken in the night choking and whooping like he cannot breath, its been really scary!
other than that he is well in the day apart from snotty.

is it possible he has whooping cough or is it fall out from the imms- even though they were 5 weeks ago?

thanks for any advice i was thinking of going to the drs but as he is relatively ok in the day and his chest sounds clear i think they will turn me away as an over anxious mother!

take him to the docs.

wishingchair · 08/03/2007 10:11

Agree - take him to docs but sounds more like croup. DD suffers on and off but is now 4 - it is really scary when it happens.

Things that work - go straight into bathroom, shut door/windows and run hot taps in bath/sink/shower anything to get it full of steam. Also taking them outside into the cold air also works.

If they start going blue around the mouth, take them to hospital.

joash · 08/03/2007 10:13

might also be broncolitis - GS had this when he was very small. Very scary, but apparently very common in young babies. Take him to the docs.

DumbledoresGirl · 08/03/2007 10:14

Sounds like croup to me. It is a cough that makes a horrendous noise - sometimes seems to fill the whole house - a bit like a seal barking.

ScottishThistle · 08/03/2007 10:16

The cough of whooping cough is very distinctive, almost like the noise a seal makes!

Go to the GP.

tissy · 08/03/2007 10:17

croup.

Whooping cough wouldn't go away during the day, and is very rare these days because of the immunisations. Have you been in contact with someone with whooping cough?

ScottishThistle · 08/03/2007 10:17

X'd post, whooping cough is very similar to croup cough though not as common in babies.

imnot27 · 08/03/2007 10:18

Both my ds s had bronciolitis as babies, butit's more wheezing and out of breath than coughing. Does sound like croup, def go to docs as sometimes only antibiotics will shift a serious bout. Don't worry if they think you are being fussy mum, they are paid to be there for you whether you are overeacting or not....My bestfriend is GP, amount she earns they deserve to cut my toenails if I fancy it!!!

docincognito · 08/03/2007 10:29

imnot27 that is a really offensive attitude!

I'm not a GP, and agree that SOME can earn a lot of money, but most are very hardworking.

Slinkstar should take her baby to the doctors because he is ill, not because the doctor has nothing better to do.

I bet your "best friend" won't be for much longer if she finds out about that comment.

expatinscotland · 08/03/2007 10:37

I agree, docingonito!

As your child is a baby and has trouble breathing during coughing, he really should be checked out.

A child in my elder daughter's nursery has been diagnosed with pertussis/whooping cough as of last week.

It's not likely, as your child has been immunised, but it's something a doctor should rule out rather than an internet forum.

Phone your surgery NOW.

yes i have made an appointment sorry disapeared i didn't think anyone was around and then my day got hectic!
i have an appointment, the cough is not a barking one so i don't know about croup but your right ill take him to the drs anyway, i mean loadsa people really do waste gp's time- im not usually one of them but i really like the comment about how much they are paid, its true so i shouldn't feel guilty about going about a cough. lol
thanks for advice
