Anybody been to see a chiropractor with a bad back?

Had a bad back since I was pg (ds in now one), wake up in the morning unable to even lift ds out of his cot, it's not bad w=once it has warmed though. We have bought a very expensive mattress which hasn't helped at all. Don't want to bother the GP as there's probably very little he can do. Was considering a chiropractor but just not sure what tey do or how much they charge?

I prefer osteopaths as they are more whole body rather than just back
I pay £30 a time
Worth every penny

Spidermama · 07/03/2007 19:30

Mine worked miracles. He was £40 for first consultation and 30 thereafter I think. I only needed two sessions and I was so much better after the first.

I can't recommend him strongly enough. We was my hero. I used him in each of my four pregnancies.

Are you in London?

Chloe55 · 07/03/2007 19:32

No, Yorkshire. Hmmm, well worth their weight in gold then it seems, I'd be more than willing to fork some cash out to have a decent back. What do they do? Just manipulate your spine? Does it hurt?

chloe55, there's a fab physios in Wakey that dh is always going to see. He had a whiplash injury recently because of footy and he always has something or the other wrong with him now he is getting on a bit and still thinking he is 20! It's called Back In Action (crap name!) and is on Agbrigg Road (runs between Barnsley Rd and Doncaster Rd). The main man there works with the England Rugby team and Dh has known him years, he is really, really good but about £45 a go. The other physios there are all really good and are about £30 (I think, DH usually sees whoever is free and recommends them to everyone he meets!). The number is 01924 250969. Go and see them, even if you go once and get them to give you some exercises to help build up your core strength, they are really good and would definately help you out!!!!!!!!

tribpot · 07/03/2007 19:45

Not thrilled by chiropractor (for dh) - thinking about trying an osteopath instead.

I would not recommend a chiropractor. They can be really expensive and a lot of them just whirl through patients like a fast food restaurant. See your GP and ask for a referal to physio. Might take a while, but my NHS physio sorted my back quickly after several chiros and osteos didn't. if you must see chiro, then recommendation is the best option.Worst thing about sore back is it gets you down so try to keep chin up - it gets better!

Chloe55 · 07/03/2007 19:47

Thanks gingermonkey. I'll give them a call and see what they say. Much appreciated.

I have had lots of different treatments for a bad back and found that chiropracty made it worse, and the best has been a good osteopath.

gingermonkey · 07/03/2007 20:44

And, chloe55, if you want a good local osteopath, then Mark Wilcox at wakefield osteopaths on Cheapside is supposed to be good. I haven't been myself, but have heard good reports. Number is 01924 369077

Chloe55 · 07/03/2007 20:50

You're like my local Yellow Pages GM, thanks!

Interesting to hear the chiropractor made you worse peacemama.

I have had acupuncture for bad period pains in the past and didn't really find it helped much, maybe it just didn't help for that condition or I had a crap doc doing it.

I'm full of useful info!

Spidermama · 07/03/2007 21:08

Totally disagree with NK............
IME GPs are insufficiently trained when it come to back problems. Also if you have a bad back you need fast results. Mine did a couple of manipulations and the pain eased there and then in the first session. He also explained to me, using a model of a spine, just what the problem was and gave me excersises and posture hints to help myself with. It really worked. I went from total agony to just a slight dull ache in one hour. It was truly astonishing.

I guess they vary, l;ike in any profession. GPs certainly tend to be a bit sniffy about them for some reason. If you can get a recommendation it would be good.

nickytwotimes · 07/03/2007 22:25

Chloe, I have learned how to change name to something more sensible! I guess overall different things work for different folk. it probably has more to do with the practitioner than the method. if you do try gp, just go in asking for a referal because as spider says they can't do much themselves in that area. a wee course of diclofenac or similar might help tide you over and can help with recovery from sessions with physio/osteo/chiro, but ask the professionals. as for speed of results, this depends on your problem but the sooner you get it seen to the better. who knew back pain was such a hot topic? Ah, the joy of lugging a kid around! Good night all x from NK etc,etc

princesscc · 07/03/2007 22:44

I am really sorry chloe55 but I have been fighting the urge to say this since I first saw the thread and I cannot hold it in any longer! If he's got a bad back - he can't be very good can he! I'm sorry!

sophiewd · 07/03/2007 22:45

Yes

I just re-read every post and still didn't get it. Then I saw the thread title...very funny!

I have spent over £1000 on chiropractors, osteoptahs, etc. Nothing worked. Afetr 10 years I went to the GP and afetr some nagging ot an MRI. I have a badly prolapsed disc. None of the chiropractors, etc realised this is what it was and happily took my money even though they never did any good.

OrmIrian · 08/03/2007 12:57

Chiropractors will do the job but it takes a few visits and costs! Also they seem to do the job over 6 visits no matter what is wrong. Was going to try an osteopath to see if they have a different way of working.
Never found a GP that did much but offer sympathy and painkillers. I once got given some physio on the NHS but it was a total waste of time and only a handful of sessions anyway.

But instead I've got back into yoga after a few years off and it's done wonders. You can do a lot to strengthen and stretch muscles yourself to ease the problem and stop it developing the next time.

appledumpling · 08/03/2007 13:45

I've had on and off back/neck problems since a car accident 10 years ago. I have tried chiropractic, osteopathy and acupuncture.

Chiropractic worked up to a point but then didn't seem to help any more. Osteopathy was much more gentle, a lot more soft tissue work rather than just manipulation and that brought about a huge improvement such that I could go 8 or 9 months with no problems. I then went for some acupuncture (just because Mum is enthusiastic about it and paid for the treatment) and their "whole body" approach worked wonders. I haven't needed to have a treatment for almost a year now.

My GP thinks osteopathy or acupuncture for back pain is the way to go. The doctor can ob prescribe painkillers but they often mask the problem rather than solve it.

appledumpling · 08/03/2007 13:46

Oh, meant to say - I also started doing Pilates 2 yrs ago and it's really helped. Yoga would also be good.
