MMR - What can I expect

My DD is having her 1st MMR jabs on Wednesday and I am finding it hard to find out information on likely immediate side effects and how she will be in the days/weeks following

Anyone got any experiences they can share please?

(BTW, don't want to start a debate about MMR)

ds was fine for his, both 1st and booster, prhaps a little tired in the afternoon and yelled at the time. dd reacted within 48hrs to hers (apparently very unusual and perhaps "coincidental" although fortunately not seriously. She had a temperature, cold symptoms and fine red raised rash on torso for about a week. Her booster was fine though.

LIZS, my ds reacted in exactly the same way as your dd, and we were told too that it was unusual to be so soon after (they say a week or so, don't htey) and unlikely to be connected. I do wonder though, particularly as I've since discovered he reacts to egg and I've heard that children with severe egg allergies have to have their MMR in hospital because of the way it's prepared.

My ds went into anaphylactic shock, we still do not know why. He was ok after some emergency room drama type stuff...
This is extremely rare, but as dd is not getting the jab, it is my only experience!

My dd is allergic to egg and her MMR went fine (in doc's surgery, paediatrician at lengths to point out that those allergic to egg are fine to have it unless they have anaphylactic allergy!). She did get immunisation induced measles a few weeks later (just rash and slightly poorly) and ds got mild immunisation induced mumps (lumps in neck and mild temp). Apparently that's rare but as mine reacted to all the other jabs I was expecting it.

I would shove a spoon of calpol down her throat when you get back just to be sure. Not that I'm a peddlar of medicine (far from it) - just that the jabs normally come in the afternoon and by the time they react, it's normally the middle of the night and that way you're covered in case of a temperature!

Any more experiences to share?
How likely is it she will have symptons?

Try this website www.mmrthefacts.nhs.uk. Sorry don't know how to do a link.

Thanks very much - just the info I was looking for!

dd1 got a measly type rash. Otherwise absolutely fine.

skerriesmum · 04/07/2004 15:28

I was so lucky, of course he yelled being jabbed (but even smiled at the nurse afterwards!) and then he was absolutely fine... maybe because I waited till he was 16 months, and he is quite big for his age. Perhaps he could still get a rash, he had the jab about three weeks ago, but I didn't even need to give him any Calpol. I'm sure your dd will be fine too.

My DD also reacted within 2 days to the MMR. DD reacted quite badly and was rather ill for a good week or so afterwards, with various rashes, very high temperature and general unwellness. It took several visits and talks with NHS direct, GPs and HV to get them to agree that the MMr was the reason for this.

However this isn't that common. Many children have little reaction. We were given a leaflet when DD had her jab which outlines the possible side effects.

prettycandles · 04/07/2004 17:17

Both of mine had no immediate reaction, except perhaps being a bit grizzly that evening. dd was a bit poorly for a week or so about 2 weeks afterwards, nothing that Calpol/Baby Nurofen and extra cuddles couldn't deal with though. In any case, we weren't sure that it was connected.

My HV recommends that you think about what you're plans are for the period 3-5 weeks after the jab, before you go for the jab. Make sure that you're not travelling, or doing something that can't be canceled during that period. If you have got something planned, then delay the MMR a little(unless there is measles in the area).
