Under active thyroid diagnosis

Hello, so for a while now I've been experiencing a few different symptoms which all point towards me potentially having an underactive thyroid. My sister and mother have been diagnosed with one and are on medication for the rest of their lives. Does anyone know how i can go about getting a diagnosis without sounding like a hypochondriac to the GP?

Just relay your symptoms and say you're wondering if it could be the start of a thyroid issue, particularly as you have close relatives with hypothyroidism.

That's great advice. If your doctor needs a bit more convincing you could try tracking your temperature. A consistently low temp. prior to getting out of bed can be a good indicator of hypothyroid. It will vary depending on what part of your cycle you're on, but should still be consistently low. Many websites have information about normal ranges.

Also, if you're worried about being on medication forever, there are some other options if your imbalance isn't too bad. Dietary changes and supplements can do a world of good, though meds may be necessary at some point, particularly if you are going to get pregnant.

You need to ask your doctor for a blood test.

I was convinced i had a thyroid problem (family history = grandmother, mum & sister all underactive) so i spoke to my doctor last week and he did a full blood test. As it turns out my thyroid is ok but my iron levels are low.
