Does anyone know what to do?

Sunday lunchtime -- go to pub and have pate for lunch

Monday -- homemade burgers {same as DH}

Tuesday -- high fever

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday + Saturday -- high fever + upset tummy + cramps

Sunday + Monday Temp normal BUT still upset tummy + cramps take Immodium

Today -- ok this morning but then eat crackers and then upset tummy again

SO basically each time I eat anything a while later = upset tummy

DH wants me to go to GP but I don't know what he can or will do for me

I missed DS singing in a concert last night and he is in a drama show tomorrow night that I must go to

What would you do?

What do you think it is?

TIA

sounds more like some sort of gastro bug to me - I would think that with food poisoning there would be some vomiting too. Also, I could be mistaken, but I think food poisoning it would generally present itself within 4 to 6 hrs of eating -
so if it was something that you ate at dinner, you would have been sick that same night.

RTKangaMummy · 06/03/2007 21:28

Thanks for info

Would you go to GP?

Would you ask for antibiotics?

I'm no expert but I would say no to food poisoning because if it was the pate on Sunday it would have been out of your system by Tuesday. And the burgers you and dh had so it can't be them.

There are some awful stomach bugs around at the moment, classic 'gastric flu' which can take ages to get over. I had one and was sick for 2 days, then retching and unable to eat for a further week. Horrible, totally horrible.

I hope you feel better soon.

Maybe worth seeing the GP just in case though, plus they can give you some anti-emetics to feel better.

imaginaryfriend · 06/03/2007 21:30

Actually 4 days high fever I think I would go and see the GP, just to be sure.

Have you been sick with it? Are you keeping things down now?

Coolmama · 06/03/2007 21:30

bearing in mind you have been feeling dodgy for a week I would go to the GP - he will most likely ask for a stool sample and then medicate accordingly.

RTKangaMummy · 06/03/2007 21:34

Yes I haven't been sick just Diarrhea {sp}

I woke up one morning and thought I was going to be but didn't but was very unwell sweaty and faint etc

sounds more like a stomach virus rather than food poisoning. i would either call NHS direct tonight or your GP tomorrow. there have been some really bad bugs going around all winter. we have been plagued by them several times. not all of us have got them at the same time so didn't often realise it was a bug at first. they have been mainly starting with stomach cramps and then really bad diarroeoh (how do you spell this) but not always vomiting. Your GP is likely to be able to tell you if there is something going around and give you advice on what to do - as will NHS direct. Get well soon.

tokentotty · 06/03/2007 21:37

Probably best if you do go to the GP to take a stool sample with you to save time and being asked to do this anyway. I can almost guarantee that they'll do nothing to help you as until the sample gets tested and the results come back they don't know if it's bacterial or something else (sorry, pregnancy brain kicking in again). I went through this and found out about 2 weeks after I got sick that I'd had campylobactor (sp)

Fat lot of good at the time when stuck on a toilet for 10 days but hey...at least I knew what it was in the end I guess

imaginaryfriend · 06/03/2007 21:37

You may have had a virus which has become a bacterial infection in which case you'll need antibiotics. And nobody else in your family with it?

tokentotty · 06/03/2007 21:38

Sorry - brain started working again. They don't know until your sample is tested if the bug is bacterial or viral which would require different treatments. Therefore, no test results, no possible treatment.

RTKangaMummy · 06/03/2007 21:42

No just me

BUT I have not been touching food and have been very careful about washing my hands loads of times

I think you guys have solved it:

That I have a bug that may have gone from viral to baterial

I will try to see GP tomorrow or Thursday

Thanks guys

Hello

I am getting over gastroenteritis right now (don't worry I washed my paws before typing). Normally involves vomiting as well as diarrhea (oh and in my case, getting to the point where you vomit blood). Batty temperature, up and down so you dress like a streaker one minute and an eskimo the next, cramps etc.

The treatment - go home and rest and if you get it so bad you start regurgitating your stomach lining they give you these antiemetics to stuff up under your gum which stop you vomiting any more but make you wish you could crawl under a rock and die (and taste like licking an iron bar).

I was told by doctor that Viral or bacterial gastroenteritis both get better on their own and that you should just keep up clear fluids with rehydration salts if you are pooping an awful lot.

Sounds like a nasty tummy bug to me. Drink lots, see if you can get some lopermide (unless you are allergic - umm brandnames like Arret Stop, Diarreze etc.) plus some rehydrating salts. You need to drink tons of water, I know it's counter intuitive but if you can down flat coke or something like it, it wiill help.

Personally I'm on cold tea with no milk.

NB you may develop a temporary dairy intolerance for three weeks afterwards because of the lack of good bacteria in your gut. I'm SO desperate for a decent cuppa after five days.....

Cheer up though, you won't die, you may even lose half a stone - I did!

RTKangaMummy · 06/03/2007 21:55

Thanks yes that is me apart from the sickness

The temp thing last week was totally mad

Neurophen didn't work in the end I resorted to taking calpol and that didn't work either even though I was taking what they said for an adult

I went opening windows to going to bed with socks on

I am drinking lemonade

Thanks for all your help

Glad you are recovered yours sounds horrible

OP posts:
tinkerbellhadpiles · 06/03/2007 21:59

Calpol - god you must be desperate!

Paracetamol will bring down your temperature (and ironically make you feel more balanced and warm).

Personally I find a cold wet flannel helpful during the hot bits and a second duvet which can be thrown off good during the cold bits.

If you can't get your hands on rehydrating salts, get a large glass of water, half a teaspoon of salt, one tablespoon of sugar, if you have it a bit of squash or whatever for flavour. Stir, drink fast before you taste how horrid it is.

You will start to feel better really soon. Look if I can crack jokes about it (and I was pooping in the loo and vomiting in a tummy tub a few days ago!) it has to get better right?

RTKangaMummy · 06/03/2007 22:13

Thanks for the tips

I will wait and see before going to the GP then as it sounds like something that is going round
