So, what are the old wives tales, tips and tricks to make an insomniac sleep?

a lettuce sandwich before retiring is allegedl good.
it contains a sleep inducing substance called "lectucarium".
Lettuce juice has been likened in effect to the sedative action of opium without the accompanying excitement. According to Culpepper, the juice of lettuce mixed with oil of roses, applied to the forehead and temples, induces sleep and cases the head-ache.'

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the evenings. Chamomile tea and roibush tea are also supposed to be good for chilling, and calming effects.

If hes unable to sleep because his mind is whirling, both Kalms & Bach rescue remedy are good.Lavender oil always helps me too.He has my sympathy-it is awful when you can't sleep.

I sprinkle lavendar oil on my pillow and do relaxation techniques as I lie in bed. I start at my feet, imagining them get lighter and lighter until they are floating (sometimes it's easier to imagine them getting heavier - just try it to see which works best). I usually count five breaths whilst concentrating on relaxing that part of my body. Then gradually work my way up my body, ending with my head (though I am usually asleep before then!). If I find my mind wandering then I just go back to where I was before and carry on. It keeps your mind occupied and helps to relax your body for long enough for you to fall asleep.

exercise and fresh air
lists of things that need doing the next day - committ it all to paper and it stops whizzing round your head

a chill down routine for about half an hour - an hour before sleep really helps. I speak as a seasoned insomniac in times of stress. So mine would be: a warm bath about 9pm, no TV or computer after this, get into PJs, make a milky drink or whisky toddy if I have a cold, lock up downstairs, then into bed for a long read or listen to a long kids story tape, such as Harry Potter. It really helps. Also exercise during the day, plus fresh air, preferably both at the same time.
Hope that helps.
