my ds has never had cradle cap, but i started using johnsons baby shampoo a week ago as he has quite a lot of hair, and just noticed he has yellow bits on his scalp..he is 9 months old...has anyone else had a reaction to it..cant believe this johnsons stuff is so potent! does it just go away or do i have to use something and try and brush it out?

it used to break out DD1's scalp and wherever it touched her face.

so we switched to an SLS-free shampoo and it's been fine ever since.

i use organic children lavender shampoo on her.

johnsons stuff is evil IMO

Kelly1978 · 06/03/2007 11:35

yep, that stuff is terrible. So heavily perfumed. Try putting oil on his hair, leaving it o/n then gently brushing it out. I've battled for years with my kids and cradle cap. ds has just had another nasty outbreak and he is 4.

i recently used boots baby sensitive skin top to toe wash on my 5 year old DD as i was out of her usual shampoo. she developed cradle cap!

it could be an SLS allergy - lots of products use SLSs are a lathering agent.

SaucyMoo · 06/03/2007 11:44

Harmful Everyday Substances at Home.

?TOXINS AND POISONS IN THE HOME THAT YOU DON?T KNOW ABOUT?

SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE

A study by the American National Cancer Institute suggests that 98% of cancers may be linked to chemical exposure, 884 neuro-toxic chemicals are used in the cosmetic, perfume and toiletries industry.
One of these chemicals is SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE (SLS). In the United States of America, Safety Data Sheets say of SLS:- ?In case of contact, immediately flush the eyes or skin with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, while removing contaminated clothing. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration then oxygen. If swallowed, wash out the mouth with water and call a doctor.
Symptoms of exposure may include burning sensation, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, vomiting. Significant symptoms can persist for more than two years.

The main industrial use for SLS is as an ingredient in floor de-waxers, engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners and agent orange.

It is commonly used in small amounts as a lathering agent in nearly all bathroom products, soap, shampoo, shower gel, bubble bath, shaving cream, toothpaste, washing up liquid, that is just a few of the common items containing SLS, What effect will this have on our bodies over a lifetime?.

SLS can cause cataracts, delay the healing of wounds, it is easily absorbed by the body, it builds up in the heart, liver and brain, it causes the skin to flake and it is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and impairs hair growth.

bloody scary stuff!

quietmouse · 06/03/2007 12:38

johnsons is really awful stuff. Both my dc get very dry skin with it and I know some children who have even got thrush from the baby wipes/bubble baths

it is so heavily perfumed. I have no idea why it's still so widely used

AitchTwoOh · 06/03/2007 12:40

i'm not a hippy, but i find that water takes the dirt of dd. she's 14 months and just uses some of ou shampoo (sls free) when her hair is dirty. (like, about once a fortnight). is the shampoo really necessary anyway?

Lio · 06/03/2007 12:42

Anotehr vote here for giving soap etc a miss. Water honestly does a good job on its own. HAd a Johnson's reaction here too.

expatinscotland · 06/03/2007 12:45

my child already had very long hair at 9months. now she's 3 it's down past the middle of her back.

we use soap on her now, because she gets all sweaty and dirty at nursery, and on dd2, but she's 15 months and gets filthy playing around.

she hasn't got as much hair as dd1, though.

i use a soap from napier's, a local herbalist, that's also SLS free and made around the corner from here.
