What does nappy thrush look like?

My dd has had nappy rash for over a week now, and it doesn't seem to be responding to anything (including Metanium! ). We've tried changing nappy brands, even putting her in washables at night.

It's not the usual spotty stuff, though there are some spots, but mostly her privates look as if she's been sandpapered: red and dry-looking. Could that be thrush? I've got a tube of Canesten, but is it safe to use without a doctor's say-so? Could it harm her if the rash isn't thrush.

I really don't fancy a trip to the GP, far rather consult Dr Mumsnet first!

My ds had nappy thrush when he was a baby. I didn't know what it was - it was actually the nursery nurses at his nursery who recognised it. I think he got it because he had been on antibiotics for a longish time.
Basically, as far as I can remember, it differed from normal nappy rash in that it was red and shiny and sort of 'weeping' looking iykwim. Peronally, I would take your dd to the GPs. I remember the stuff I got for ds cleared it up pretty quickly.
