Partial Ingrown Toenail Removal

Hi, I've suffered with an ingrown toenail for a few years, and have been able to live with it but it has gotten worse to the point where if anything even brushes it, it kills! It's awful painful and I've had it looked at and I have to have it partially removed at my GP's at the end of the month.

I'm glad I'm having it sorted as the pain is so severe, I can't take it anymore but I just want to know if you've had it done how it went, how painful was it after whilst healing, etc. Also, whereabouts did they inject the anaesthetic? Random question but I was just wondering. Oh and also how long it took to heal.

Thanks!

SpaghettiMeatballs Really?! 😂 Bloody hell! Thanks for your help!

Yep! There are a whole generation of podiatrists out there trained by watching DH's manky toe video!

Mind you, it was clearly an excellent example of how to do the procedure because it was very successful.

I've had it done, guys! Just got home from GP's. Didn't like the needle part very much but it soon went totally numb. Didn't take long at all to remove! Feels really weird now when I walk though, not being able to feel my big toe. There really was nothing to it. Now we'll see what it's like when yhe numbness wears off! Thanks for all your help 😃

Glad it's over for you, OP.
Mine was taken off by GP at surgery, but unfortunately I was told to see a nurse for dressing changes, which were sometimes painful when stuck, and I did get a fungal infection later, so I would suggest that you do your own (daily) dressing changes with salt water.
The worst is over now, so congratulations.

WinterRose92 · 28/03/2017 10:24

EmNetta Oooh, sounds nasty! I have to to back this afternoon for the nurse to dress it so I'll see how it goes but after that I think it's just self care. Pain in the bum to have to go back all the time so I hope not.
Thank you!

Well done winterrose. Ds' appointment is Thursday lunchtime and re-dressing on Friday. He only gets home tomorrow so won't have too long to think about it! Is it painful today or just sore?

WinterRose92 · 28/03/2017 13:59

LIZS It's actually not too bad today, a little sore, but way better than the pain of the ingrown toenail for sure. Would definitely have it again. I didn't like it when the anaesthetic went in, it did sting and I felt a bit sick, but I'm not great with needles! It went numb pretty quick and did not feel a thing. He'll be okay, like you said, he doesn't have long to think about it too much and I'm sure he won't regret it. Let me know how he gets on!

Thanks , he's home and the anaesthetic is starting to wear off. It bled a bit through the dressing while he was waiting for me to pick him up so has put another layer on. He's now recumbent on the sofa for the afternoon!

WinterRose92 · 30/03/2017 21:32

Aww, bet he glad it's over now, though! I did take some paracetamol Tuesday evening as it was quite sore, but now, 3 days after having it done it really doesn't feel too bad at all. I'm already feeling the benefits, it's lovely to walk around without constant pain. Would have it done again in a heartbeat.
Hope he's feeling okay.

Thank you. Glad your toe is feeling better so quickly. He had nurofen when the local wore off but is already perkier and eating the fridge empty! He's been advised not to get it wet for a few weeks. Back tomorrow for dressing change.

WinterRose92 · 30/03/2017 22:06

Thank you. Glad he's feeling okay! When I went to get the dressing changed they just put on of those sterile plasters over it and gave me a few but I went and bought a few more from the pharmacy, just to protect it a bit longer really. Nice to not have a huge, bulky bandage on it! Hopefully that's the end of it for him now!

Wondering how things were now winterrose. ds went to gp this morning as the dressing was getting marked when he walked any distance and he has an infection, so back on abs. Just in time for new uni term too.

WinterRose92 · 22/04/2017 10:56

Oh no! That sounds nasty. Hope he's okay. My toenail is pretty much healed, all pain is gone. I didn't get any infection, it was sore for a while but that was about it. Glad because we're going on a little holiday next week and there's gonna be a lot of walking! I hope your son's toenail improves soon! Typical it's just before going back to uni, too.

I had an ingrown toenail, coming straight after a fungal infection. The ingrown toenail kept getting repeatedly infected and I was constantly on antibiotics, so they removed the entire nail. The procedure itself was painless and healing was fine, but the injections into the toe were AWFUL. So painful I screamed.

The nail grew back and a year later it was ingrown and repeatedly infected again. Again, I had to get the entire nail removed, but this time they put phenol on it so it wouldn't grow back.

A year later, something's going on with it at the moment, but I'm not sure what!

Glad you got yours sorted Flowers

WinterRose92 · 22/04/2017 22:03

SpreadYourHappiness I gotta say, I didn't like the injections, felt pretty faint but okay once they were done. Like you said, it was painless after that part! Before I had mine removed I was getting infections, not nice. I'm a little worried it might grow back but I'll cross that bridge if/when I come to it!
Have you had yours checked out? That's bad luck if it's growing back again! I hope not! Flowers

SpreadYourHappiness · 22/04/2017 23:21

WinterRose92 Yeah, the injections were brutal. And with one of mine, the whole toe didn't go numb so they had to inject into the infected bit which near damn crucified me Shock

I haven't had it checked out yet, no! The nail isn't growing back, but something is growing there, something white Confused I need to go back really, but I'm already behind on my asthma review and my smear test so I'm going to have to try and fit everything in!

Mermaidinthesea123 · 22/04/2017 23:25

I'm a podiatrist too, one of my colleagues is doing mine next week but I'm having a total nail avulsion, whole nail off as I messed it up dropping concrete on it.
I do around 6 a week, most of my patients are kids aged 9 plus and they get through it ok.
It's just the injections that hum a bit but after that you'll feel nothing.
Max 6-8 weeks to heal but if you are fit and well should be much quicker. I have known them heal in a week.
It's well worth doing, no more pain.
