like the moron I am, I managed to stick my hand on the hob today and burnt the ever-living feck out of it. Second degree burn I think - it's blistering. All over my palm. Pain has been unbearable for a good 8 hours now and I have to keep my hand in a jar of cold water. Anybody been in the same boat? Any tips? How long will it feel this bad?

Have taken paracetamol and applied what appears to be the world's most ineffectual burn ointment. had a small glass of port to dull things but I'm pg so shouldn't have another. DH says I need to stop cooling it and face the pain for a while, he thinks that'll improve it. I tried for 6 mins though and it was AGONY.

god I'm so shit at dealing with pain. No idea why I've let myself in for another labour...

You need to have it dressed properly. Go get it checked out.
In the meantime, wrap something around it so it's airtight, the pain comes from the nerve endings being exposed. You'll notice a difference when tightly wrapped.

Did something similar when I scalded my hand on a kettle (won't explain what I did, too stupid..)

Tried running it under cold water for a couple of hours and made no difference. Ended up at A&E who gave painkillers and had it in a polythene bag taped round my wrist and liquid paraffin inside for a couple of days (I think) then a dressing.

Get yourself seen asap, if it's not better by itself by now it isn't going to get better.

Good lord, thanks for all the responses, I didn't expect so many so soon! So I have to go to A&E?? Oh christ. I hate my life. I'm 36 weeks pg, with a toddler who's going through a difficult phase, and I'm already stressed and exhausted as it is.

I've just noticed if you are pregnant it says to definitely go to A&E.

Fucking fuckity fuckballs.

Fuck. Ow. Thanks for the support. I'll call a taxi.

Good luck OP, def A&E. Hands, especially palm are an emergency at any time.

BastardGoDarkly · 07/03/2017 22:32

Your dh will have the toddler though right?

Take a book, and some chocolate/money for the machines.

I hope you get on ok op. Sounds really nasty.

I did exactly this once. It fucking kills like s bitch. Something I'd recommend once you've been seen by a doctor is aloe vera jelly. Its very effective for burns/stings etc really helped when I did it - mine was quite small so stuck it in a bucket of ice for a good half hour and then rubbed the jelly on. Pain died down after a couple hours but it still stang for a while after.

Good luck op Flowers

Hi OP

I hope you you are getting it sorted at the walk in centre or A&E.

About a year ago I scalded myself twice pouring boiling water into a hotwater bottle. The first time the burn got infected and I had a short course of antibiotics. The second time (I know I should have learnt from the first experience and avoided hotwater bottles) a huge blister came up on my wrist and after comments at work I took myself off to the minor injuries unit. The wait is a lot less at those places than A&E.

They took the blister off, bandaged it up and said to come back in a few days. It's important to monitor a burn to remove blistered or scabbed over skin and to check for signs of infection.

I hope you get your hand looked after without too much of a wait and don't end up with too bad a scar.

How did you get on OP?
