Endoscopy

Hi. I have been referred for an urgent endoscopy as for the past couple of months I have been regularly choking on my saliva/drinks (that feeling like it's gone down the wrong way and uncontrollable coughing). I forgot to ask when the hospital phoned me how long the procedure would take. Is there anyone out there who has had an endoscopy for similar reasons who can tell me how long theirs went on for and whether they found anything?! Thanks

I had one recently . Numbing spray to the throats and a hand hold from the nurse. All done and dusted within 10 mins and the only bit that was unpleasant was swallowing the tube.
They found an hiatus hernia and the biopsies showed helicobacter pylori that I took a week of Metronipazole and clarithromycin for .
Will take opmeprazole long term for the acid indigestion from the hiatus hernia.
All in all not a bad procedure. Good luck.

Sorry, just diagnosed with Helicobacter Pylori and that was done under endoscopy. I had what they call conscious sedation and have no memory of it and was able to meet friend for coffee about two hours later.
Good luck!

I had conscious sedation too, don't remember anything at all about the whole thing! Marvellous.

Took about an hour and a half altogether, but you can't drive for 24 hours after sedation.

I had one last year . I had a feeling of not being able to swallow properly . It took about 15 minutes . They found gastritis and had no sedation . It wasn't to bad ! Hope it goes OK op. X

If they offer sedation take it. I'ts not pleasant, and nobody knows how they'll cope with it until they have, and by then it's usually too late. Mine was horrid, constant gagging but thankfully it was over with within 3 minutes or so, biopsies were taken and as above was found to have H/Pylori. I didn't take sedation as was moving house the next morning. Had to stay in a further hour after the procedure and be observed eating and drinking.

If you are sedated you can't drive, and need someone to go home with you and bserve you for 24hrs.

Good luck!
