Hi,
Been told I have tinnitus in my right ear, its driving me mad at night, can cope during the day. Had MRI scan, hearing test and seen an ENT specialist who can find no obvious cause. They are sending me to another hospital for a masking device. Anybody tried alternative help? Thanks.

Poor you, triplets - it must drive you mad!
No advice I'm afraid, but will bump for you.

triplets - I had tinnitus caused by my baby crying so much. Fortunately it went after a couple of days, but it was scary.

Hope you find a cure.

The RNID have some things that might help. I used one of their "white noise" tapes at night for a little while, and they now have other products which help mask the noises. Their tinnitus pages are here

Ginkho Biloba can help with some forms of tinnitus - I didn't find it helped me but it might be worth a look.

I have suffered with bilateral tinnitus for over 20 years now and have tried lots of different things to try to ease the suffering.
There is no remedy for tinnitus, it becomes something that you learn to live with.
However, you can try some of the following:
Avoid aspirin or anything with quinine in it as this can aggravate the tinnitus.
(Some AD's can also aggravate).
For me, stress also makes my noises worse.
I tried a tinnitus masker (looks just like a hearing aid) although I found that it gave minimal relief whilst wearing it, the noises seemed to be louder when I took it off.
Have you tried a noise machine ?
I have one that i'm selling.
When are your noises worse and what sort of noise is it ?
There are tinnitus help groups that you can join.
Will try to find details.

I also found that having continuous background noise helps me.

I suffer too. Think it was all that loud music in my teens and 20's. Got worse after I had dd1, was told it may have been damage due to throwing up too much, not sure though.

I have low ring tone in one ear and high pitched in the other, also have blocked sinuses, so am half deaf!! Sends me mad if I home in on it, but have to just get on with it I assume.

I've recently suffered a profound bilateral hearing loss (bad enough in itself) and have horrendous tinnitus too. Most of the conventional tinnitus treatments (masking, sound pillow) won't work for me, but I was told about Tinnitus Retraining Therapy which sounded interesting. There seems to be quite a following in the States and many therapists here in the UK are actually qualified audiologists. Here's what's said about it:

"TRT is a method aimed at habituating of reactions of the body induced by tinnitus, and habituation of perception of the tinnitus signal itself. Our goal is to retrain the patients' brain so they treat tinnitus similar to the way they treat the sound of a refrigerator in their kitchen, which they are normally not aware of, and when they do hear the sound, it is not bothersome. The method retrains reflexes involving connections of the auditory with the limbic and autonomic nervous systems, and retrains the subconscious part of the auditory pathway to block the tinnitus signal"

The website will tell you more about it.

Hope you find a solution.

Hi triplets - hope the tinnitus isn't driving you too mad. It must be horrendous for you at night time when you are trying to sleep!
Things aren't too bad with me thanks. We will have to sort a meet up out sometime soon!
