My ds is 10 and has never had this problem before. It happened to him on wed and again last night. Just wondering if anyone can tell me if there could be any reason for this. He is suffering from a tickly cough and first thought this may have caused it to happen. should I be worried about any ifection or anything. Its so out of the ordinary for him. I really didnt expect it to happen again. He doesnt seem to have anything worrying him.

Im not saying this is the case but when my daughter is worrying about something she will start bedwetting, most of the time she is just worrying about something like a school play or test a school. If there is other symptoms it could be an infection otheerwise. Hope this is helpful

THANKS, NO HE DOESNT SEEM TO HAVE ANY OTHER SYMPTOMS TO GO WITH AN INFECTION.

it sounds like its more to do with the cough than anything else.you know what its like yourself when you can't stop coughing, you can have those little leaky accidents(or is that just me?! lol) if his room is quite dry it'll be making his cough worse during the night.
having a problem with my own son wetting the bed,he's nearly 8 and still wets the bed unless we toilet him during the night.

has he been having any diffrent drinks recently? my ds wets the bed occasionally and it seems to be after he has had drinks with sodium benzoate in.

ash6605 · 04/03/2007 21:16

I always make sure he has nothing to drink after his tea(usually 5.30)and thats just robinsons orange, same thing every day.if he's thirsty after that i just tell him to suck water off his toothbrush when he's brushing his teeth at bedtime.(mean i know!)
he has his wee before bed-7.30 and then again when me and hubby go to bed(sometime between 11 and 1am)and he still often wakes up at around 6 saying he's wet the bed!
he's never been a huge drinker and i do wonder if thats why,he won't have a large bladder due to lack of fluids during the day, meaning he won't have the capacity to hold large amounts on a nightime.i can't see any other reason for it,doctor just say's he'll grow out of it but he's nearly 8.

I was told that lifting a child (ie, taking him to the toilet when you go to bed) could make matters worse as he'll be doing that wee half asleep whereas you want to condition his body that he only wees when he is fully awake (and on the toilet of course ).

We stopped lifting at the same time as we cut out sodium benzoate so i can't say which, if either, was the reason for our DS's success.

Check for thread worms - one of the most common causes of bedwetting,as well as the other causes of anxiety, urinary tract infection etc.

ash6605 · 05/03/2007 11:39

this sounds a bit thick but how do you check for worms?i know what they are and how you get them but is there a way to check for them or do i just treat anyway to be on safe side?

chloesmumtoo · 05/03/2007 12:58

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE EVERYONE. SORRY NOT HAD CHANCE TO POST SINCE. I DEFINATELY THINK ITS THE COUGH THAT DONE IT NOW. HE STILL HAS REAL BAD TICKLY COUGH BUT MAKING SURE HE GOES TO THE TOILET REGULARY IN NIGHT AT MO. BUT WILL CHECK OUT THE WORM THING LOL. THEY DID HAVE A SPATE OF IT DOWN SCHOOL RECENTLY AH..........NO HE HADNT HAD ANY DIFFERANT DRINKS HE LIKES JUST WATER! HOWEVER, HE HAS BEEN DRINKING MORE DUE TO THE COUGH. ASH,I THINK THEY GET AN ITCHY BUM AT NIGHT IF THEY HAVE WORMS AS THEY COME OUT AROUND THE ANUS TO LAY EGGS OWHHH.............WILL HAVE TO TAKE A LOOK. ALSO I THINK YOU MAY SEE THEM IN THEIR POO.

Just got in from work - hence the delayed reply. I'm afraid you just have to get a torch and look at his bottom. There is no other way! Not all children have an itchy bottom. You have to look at around 10 - 11pm because the worms don't come down to the rectum to lay their eggs until night time. You can then see them as little white threads, usually wiggling. Sorry to anyone else just about to make a cup of tea or anything. Being a nurse, i am not squeamish about anything, but tend to forget that others may not appreciate all the gory detail.
