Generally feeling like crap!

I've been feeling generally rubbish for a while, suspected it might be my thyroid but I've had that tested along with some other tests (more on that below) and it's fine. I'm seeing my GP on Monday to discuss the test results as I had them done privately, but as it's not my thyroid I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar combination of issues as I'm about on my knees.

The GPs at my surgery are OK but they seem to like to ask me what I think is wrong! (I'm a very rare visitor btw!) and to need a bit of gentle nudging and directing.

So, symptoms:
-very fatigued, struggling to get up in the morning, struggling to sleep, actually falling asleep in the afternoon if I'm at home and coming close to it at work.
-lots of dull, tension type headaches, pretty much daily
-some gastric symptoms; I'm normally constipated (sorry TMI!) but if I'm not then it tends to be very little warning uh oh, need to go NOW although not generally diarrhoea.
-quite often get abdominal cramps and bloating especially if sitting for a long time (travelling is hell, I travel for work and have to chose my clothes with extreme caution)
-gas Blush
-Overweight and find it very difficult to lose weight (I'll lose for a week or two then that's it, done, finito, no more coming off.) I've found that what I eat calorie wise doesn't tie in with my weight since I had severe hyperemesis with my DD 7 years ago and lived on a packet of super noodles per day for about 3 months!
-lots of general body aches and pains
-tingling/cold feeling and aching in right arm
-eyes which go from fine to agonisingly itchy and weeping in 2 seconds for no reason whatsoever; I've tried make up/no makeup/different products and it seems to happen randomly. Optician suspected allergy but after experimenting I'm not convinced
-Very "foggy" mentally, really struggling to focus or concentrate
-very moody, irritable and easily stressed

The blood test picked up a few things:
-Severe Vit D Deficiency (22nmol)
-Folate deficiency (2.7ug/L)
-Vit b12 - technically in range but on the low side at 218
-tryglicerides - below range at 0.63

They also flagged my Hba1C as low, they had a min on the reference range of 29mmol/mol and mine came in at 28

Other tests done were a general blood panel, liver, kidneys, TSH, FT3, FT4 and cortisol. They all seem OK.

What I'm not sure is if it's just the deficiencies themselves which are making me feel rotten or if there's something which might be underlying causing them all. Has anyone had similar symptoms who can offer insight, please? I can't carry on feeling this bad. Sad

Thanks, that's really useful! Interestingly my doctor was fairly nonplussed by the low vit d, pretty much laughed it off as typical Scottish winter! I know lower than ideal is normal for scots but I'm not convinced sever deficiency is!

At the moment the doc has done nothing supplement wise, so I'm currently taking 10000iu via oral spray - this might be a bit high but was based on info I found about what docs were often prescribing for those who were badly deficient. My plan was to try and get the level up then reduce the dose for maintenance. I also have big exams next month and desperately need my brain back. I'm also supplementing the b12 siblingually as well as taking folate. B12 seems to be like vit d with the minimum range being well below what's needed.

The big question is whether there's an absorption issue underlying...I'm a rampant carnivore so I really shouldn't be even remotely low on b12! I had pretty severe hyperemesis 7 years ago and have never been right in terms of how my body deals with intake and calories since then. Trying yet again to lose weight and really hoping that at least addressing the deficiencies will help.

Have you had your calcium and parathyroid hormone checked? I had lots of similar symptoms and it turned out to be a parathyroid problem (NOT the same as thyroid).

No I've not but I will look in to it, thanks. I saw the doctor yesterday and he basically said tests were normal, that the vit b12 level couldn't be causing issues...Couldn't suggest anything else just told to crack on basically and take vit d

Really frustrating! I tried to discuss the fact my metabolism has been screwed since I had hyperemesis and he literally said nothing, just made a joke about blame babies. I wasn't kidding!

OP I saw your title alone and thought Vit D deficiency, then read it had showed up in your tests. Take the spray form D-Lux - they sell it in Holland and Barrett - get the stronger version (bright green stripe on box. It makes you feel better almost immediately. Within a few days you'll stop needing the afternoon naps. Changed my life.

A good iron supplement is Feroglobin (from Boots) or Floradix (same sort of thing but twice the price and herbal)

I had similar problems a year ago. Supplements changed my health - I was so dismissive of them until then.

I have that exact spray, and another from amazon. Definite noticeable difference although I am taking more than one dose just now, looking at what other places do initial loading doses of 50000-100000 units a week don't seem uncommon just to get you going again.

I think the docs approach was a bit "yeah half of Scotland has it"...looks at stats for linked conditions....no nothing to see here at all!

I totally agree re previously being dismissive of supplements though, I've taken various things in the past and seen to benefit but I think this is where they're actually useful- dealing with actual needs iyswim
