Can your appendics give you pain and it be ok ??

Last sat night Dd1 was violently sick. She said that before she was sick she'd had stomach ache around her belly button. After she'd been sick she said that the pain was on the right hand side of her belly button, not right over the side but just next to belly button.

When I told my mum she said she thought it was her appendics and that it can hurt on and off for a while before it suddenly becomes really bad, is that right ??

Dd has since complained of the pain again, in the same place, but said it comes and goes.

I'd get it checked out.

One of the students in my department was poorly for a week before having to be rushed to A&E with what turned out to be ruptured appendix .

KezzaG · 01/03/2007 22:03

Mine hurt on and off over a period of months. GP wouldnt do anything until it was v bad and in the end I went to A&E when I was doubled up with it.

I dont know if it grumbles but never amounts to anything, I think when it is bad it just gets worse but over time.

NuttyMuffins · 01/03/2007 22:04

Blimey expat, scary.

I'll try and get her in to see the gp, although that is like mission impossible lately tbh.

She hasn't been sick again with it, just the pain now and then.

When I had mine removed many years ago, there was talk of 'grumbling appendix', which I think meant when the person was suffering on and off pain.

From memory, the pain often starts on the left of the belly button before going to the right and the tummy area can be tender when touched.

Just before mine got really serious, I felt extremely nauseous and was vomiting.

When it was removed I was told it was near to bursting and the area was in a bad way.

Follow your gut instinct ( pardon the pun) and take your dd to be checked out if you are really worried about it.

JodieG1 · 01/03/2007 22:05

My dd has had this with a fever today, school called to pick her up. Took her to gp and she felt her stomach and said it wasn't likely to be her appendix. She was crying with the pain and lying on the floor and her temp was over 102, calpol and nuerofen helped with the temp and she went to bed happier tonight. She was 5 on Sat. Felt so sorry for her as she looked awful Hope your dd is better soon and def get it checked out if you're worried. Gp said dd could have abdominal migraine, never heard of that until today, she thought maybe urine infection but ruled that out with a urine test.

Oh and I called gp for an emergency appt and they call back to check symptoms etc. Took 30 mins for dr to call and then he said to bring her straight in.

NuttyMuffins · 01/03/2007 22:08

I did prod her tummy a bit and she said it didn't hurt when I pressed it, more when she breathed, like a stitch really.

I'll see if she mentiones it again.

That's what happened to this young man, Kezza, only he was vomitting and running a fever for a few days - poorly for a few before that.

Fobbed off by the GP.

His flatmate phoned an ambulance at 1AM Tuesday morning when the poor kid couldn't uncurl himself for the pain.

He was rushed into surgery at 3AM, and as a result they couldn't do it keyhole. They had to cut him open.

I got a call from his frantic mother Wednesday morning explaining why he wouldn't be coming to lecture. She and his father had rushed over from Aberdeen.

Poor lady! I can only imagine how frightening that was.

When you're children are grown, and you get a call in the middle of the night, the dread must be terrifying.

Keep us posted, muffins!

Will do

It would actually make more sense to get them removed at an arranged time and not as an emergency really wouldnt it. Surely more cost effective too.

Mine did hurt when touched and the pain was fully on my side and slightly round to my back as well.

Hope she gets well nuttymuffins, or at least it gets sorted before it gets worse.

Aimsmum you have just brought back the memories of my internal at A&E......I had forgotten all about it! Yes you are right, it bleein' hurt.

marymoocow · 01/03/2007 22:16

i was in hopital for 6 weeks with appendicitis (sp?). Top surgeon kept telling others what it was, and they kept on over ruling him.
I was tested for crohns, coeliacs and alsorts. Was also told it was all in my mind
Finally i was given a laparotomy and suprise suprise they removed my appendix.
Was agony.
JodieG1 - I have also suffered with abdominal migraines, they do exist, although hardly anyone has ever heard of them. I started with them from about the age of 6, got worse through puberty, and only really resolved themselves once i had had ds1, which my mother was told would happen. Hope for your dc sake that is not the problem.
Sorry for long post

also be very careful if she gets into quite a lot of pain, and then it suddenly stops.

it is common to think "oh that's OK then" when actually it means that it has ruptured and that is extremely dangerous.

I think if she is being sick you should get her checked out.

pointydog · 01/03/2007 22:20

You can get a grumbling appendix. Difference is with appendicitis, the pain will gradually get worse. SO we were told.

littlemissbossy · 01/03/2007 22:20

Hi Nutty, just seen this.
If she complains again, I'd call the emergency doctor if you can or get her to A&E. Sorry, really don't want to worry you but eldest DS had similar symptons and ended up with a burst appendics... very nasty. HTH lmbx

Miaou · 01/03/2007 22:22

I had my appendix out in October last year - looking back it was "grumbling" for over three weeks beforehand. I kept going back to my GP but I really didn't present in a typical way so they didn't think it was appendicitis. When my temperature started to spike, though, I went back to the GP and he arranged for me to be admitted. It wasn't until I had a scan that they were confident it was my appendix, and I had surgery an hour later (open because they don't do keyhole at my hosp, but my scar is lovly and neat!). It was quite badly infected they said and they were glad to have got it out when they did.

My pain certainly came and went, and the pain moved around quite a bit too. It only "settled" in my right side just before I was admitted. When the ambulance came to pick me up, they asked if I could press in hard, then asked if it hurt as I let go, rather than when applying the pressure (which it did) - at which point they say "ah yes, appendix!"

HTH. Do keep an eye on her temp.

Ceolas · 01/03/2007 22:23

Definitely insist she is checked tomorrow.

Yes it is possible to 'grumble' as Amismum says happened to her. So is rupture, which can be fatal.

INSIST!

Hope she's feeling better soon
